A version is to get an official release sometime this year.
Is that Safe? Or at least safer than the Bonds/Westway2 Release?
Or the Sandinista and 10 Upping St deluxe versions. Promises promises.
We are a long suffering bunch.
Except we get most of it for free.

TBF I always buy any official product if it's worthy. LC 25th, Shea, Sound System, TIBAD Legacy, 001 etc.

Wasn't suggesting anyone here doesn't buy official product. I have them all and then some. All I'm saying is we haven't been starved of stuff. We have a lot of stuff for free over the years.

Yeah, gotcha mate. It was just awful being teased with the S!, Upping St and Westway projects, only for them to fall through.

I’m still holding out hope for Westway although it seems like I shouldn’t haha.

Excited to hear about Rat Patrol’s release though! Will definitely purchase despite all the good versions already out there.

Sort of bumping sort of not...

I'm getting back into this today. I had originally intended to make my own version then got sort of sidetracked with the research part and didn't get that far.

This thread is great, though has a lot of tangents. Is anyone keen on a new thread where we scientifically / methodologically construct the definitive version based on what we have available?

Some of the previous cleanups, while appreciated, have IMO introduced some compression artefacts. I'm guessing it was removing the record surface noise that led to this. And the YouTube one is great, but is on YouTube.

What I've found so far (and this took way too long).
- The correct speed change was -1.564% to get the acetate to match Sound System. There was still some variation over the song though. I believe the record wasn't consistently playing at 33 1/3 RPM and therefore the variations may match up with a revolution of the record. Perhaps it was warped? But I'm not smart enough to figure out how to correct something like this anyway. Ideally you'd diff the tracks that are on the acetate AND sound system, 'learn' from the diff, and automatically apply this knowledge to the acetate songs that don't have a Sound System version.

With EQ it was the same, I tried to do analysis on both tracks, screen shot, then transfer to photoshop to overlay and cut levels at each frequency, but it proved hard and I found dropping 2.66 db RMS from the acetate matched it to Sound System quite well.

As for surface noise, given it's most prominent on the first and last tracks of each side I don't think it's worth any automatic filtering of this, it takes out too much of the 'real' sound and adds in what I consider to sound like an inferior sound compared to the raw acetate rip.

To address someone early on who asked a question about it going from 130kbps to FLAC, there is a good reason to do that. Even though this can't add fidelity to the track, after it's been modified to change speed or levels or anything like that, if you recompress you will add in double the compression artefacts compared to the original rip, so it's better to go with FLAC in this case IMO.

If we do work on a definitive version, is mega still the only place to host it? I remember this forum used to have a way to host bootlegs a long time ago.
How do you mean "definitive"? Sounding better perhaps. The version on YouTube is good and I have that in Flac.

No, not exactly a version of RP. That’s all I can say for now.

A collectively agreed "best we can do with what we have" that includes the various source materials, individuals knowledge (of which there is plenty here) and transparent / collaborative methadology.

So for example, the Acetate and Sound System would be primary source, likely other Rat Patrols would be for reference. The historian side of things here (already evident in the thread) used to make key decisions like track order but also if for example a track on sound system is definitely the same edit as the acetate, but mastered so differently that the acetate may be preferred even with surface noise and mp3 artefact issues.

Any actual edits to the acetate would ideally be transparent / collaborative. For example just listing steps taken, some healthy debate, etc.

What I have heard so far would elevate this to be on par for Sandinista! For me. That means I am likely to listen to it very regularly and I want to invest in that and likely will, just want to see if anyone else is keen.

Yeah, I can't complain since the fans have really made the most of what we do have. In addition to the teases, knowing they are sitting on live tapes that we will likely never hear. Yes, the leaked soundboards and audience tapes are great, but it'd be great to get shows mixed as well as FHTE.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

So I have been hooked up with a version that removes my need to master one myself (a PM here, not a new source).

My observation is this is the true worthy follow up to Sandinista!, And if you think of it in the context of LC to Sandinista to this, all in the space of 2-3 years, I feel like my love for the Clash just went up again.

I no longer believe there is ANY superiority in Combat Rock, including vocal takes from Joe. I prefer the relaxed ones in this. A Know your rights / straight to hell double A side single with the Combat Rock takes means we wouldn't have lost anything big.

Combat Rock never felt like a proper album to me. Too disjointed and sterile. This is is instead a perfect extension to Sandinista with a cool down pace to it. The two openers really illustrate this, Magnificent 7 and Straight to hell are both bass driven long numbers but one is an amp up and the other a melancholy affair. One starts abruptly, the other fades in as if to say welcome back. It is just perfect.

All I need now is a fixed Give em enough rope
