I can't argue that it's more "rock". The only other reason has to be the experimental nature those B-sides were taking. I think it's only Kory and me who dig that mutant funk punk thing they had going on.Heston wrote: ↑11 Apr 2022, 1:56pmYeah, it is quite rocky in comparison. Isolated the vocal from the b side and laid over the rock version.matedog wrote: ↑11 Apr 2022, 11:23amThat's my understanding yeah. Nice. This is the B-side vocal put over the instrumental version?

I think CK likes that stuff too, but more on the live side of things.Marky Dread wrote: ↑11 Apr 2022, 2:10pmI can't argue that it's more "rock". My thing for many years now is that The Clash for me is Joe yelling and screaming and Mick's guitar at insta-tinitus volume. Any kind of grooves they wanted to hit in that context is alright by me. So pretty much mostly live, yeah. The rest of it's safely in my rear view these days.Kory wrote: ↑11 Apr 2022, 5:50pmI think CK likes that stuff too, but more on the live side of things.Marky Dread wrote: ↑11 Apr 2022, 2:10pmI can't argue that it's more "rock". I've heard this alternate version of Cool Confusion(rock instrumental version+lyriccs from hip hop version) .It doesn't work for me....the rock instrumental version has a fast pressing rhythm ... cannot be sung in hip hop style.

Yeah Cool Confusion in Sound System box Version is sung in hip hop style(or rap style if you prefer)

I'm not convinced myself. There's definitely a melody (though a rather weak one) being sang rather than rapped. Imo anyway.APACHES67 wrote: ↑19 Apr 2022, 8:13amYeah Cool Confusion in Sound System box Version is sung in hip hop style(or rap style if you prefer)

I think the definitions are more ambiguous than rapping being just atonal. There is plenty of melody based vocals that are considered hip hop. Maybe not in 1981, but certainly today.Heston wrote: ↑19 Apr 2022, 12:00pmI'm not convinced myself. There's definitely a melody (though a rather weak one) being sang rather than rapped. I wouldn't describe CC as hip hop style myself, but I don't think it's too far off. Some of it drifts in and out of melody ("that reactive spark" line for example).
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I think a like all the versions of CC
I remember trying to convert a friend to like the clash, without much success and one day he came back to me saying "that's it I'm a fan, I understood the clash thanks to the song CC"
Pure truth

"Complete Control," not my thing.
"Safe European Home," can't get into it.
"Clampdown," just not into it.
"Cool Confusion," holy shit this is great!
Your friend is certainly unique.

I'm with Heston. I don't think of hip hop or rap when I listen to CC.Heston wrote: ↑19 Apr 2022, 12:00pmI'm not convinced myself.
