Guess it's time to give it another listen in their honor.

I just did, a Japanese CD version courtesy of the marvellous Deny. It is still brilliant!

There's only one version to listen to for me. Marky's finest remaster.

Another vote for Marky here as well. It was the first time I'd properly heard Mick's bass.
I mean Paul's bass ;)

I think so too. The stories of this and GEER are too specific to be otherwise. Especially with GEER, why would Pearlman want to waste studio time making Paul do take after take after take if Mick was just going to replace it later? It doesn't make any sense. I can see it on Stay Free, as I have a pet theory that Mick just did the bass on all of his vocal songs, but aside from that it seems like a monumental waste of time and money. Especially for a guy like Sandy.

The reason it makes sense to me that it's Paul is that in that first rush of punk, authenticity and sincerity mattered more than technical skill. This wasn't an environment of making sure every note is pitch-perfect; that was the kind sterile perfectionism they were rejecting. It was getting it down, a document of those songs at that time. And the Clash were still true believers at that time (signing with Columbia notwithstanding). It would have been phony to do it otherwise.

Completely agree, regardless of which version, their debut album has and will always be my all time favorite go to album. Just brings back such great memories about something completely new and different.
