I got a lot of time for Midge. McLaren wanted the Pistols to rival the Bay City Rollers so the Midge thing isn't as crazy as it seems. Obviously it was before John joined the band. Not surprising Midge who had already had a number one single with Slik didn't want to join a bunch of unknowns.Toppers Boppers wrote: ↑29 Mar 2025, 2:24pmYeah, an amazing and unmatched journey in music, the story about Bernie and Malcolm asking him to front the Pistols when they were in Glasgow (the offer declined of course) in late summer 1975 is hysterical. Totally agree. Anyone who can say they didn't do at least one dumb embarrassing thing in their teens/early 20s, i would just say has never lived. Certainly did Chrissie or Steve no harm anyway. Actually went back and listened to the Visage album a couple of nights back and reminded how good it is, really choc full of sublime 80s pop.

Yes, it was before Lydon was approached, I read Midge was put off by 'weirdo' McLaren waffling on in the back of his car, but still bought a knock-off amp from him. This would have been a few months before Slik hit #1 in January 1976.Marky Dread wrote: ↑29 Mar 2025, 3:34pmI got a lot of time for Midge. Yeah my timeline is out by a few months. February for one week apparently. I think that was the second Slik single to be released. So Midge must've been thinking who are this pair of chancers when Bernie and Malcolm showed up. From all accounts Midge new a good bargain when he saw one. I wonder if Malcolm even knew who he was. Or was aware when Slik had the number one that Midge was that guy.Toppers Boppers wrote: ↑31 Mar 2025, 3:27amYes, it was before Lydon was approached, I read Midge was put off by 'weirdo' McLaren waffling on in the back of his car, but still bought a knock-off amp from him. Yeah I have Midge's book. It's a good read. I've read so many books on the Pistols and related that I literally have to go back and check certain facts as there are so many contradictions in them.Toppers Boppers wrote: ↑31 Mar 2025, 10:02amWho knows, probably not, although he was getting more astute about the music biz as things developed.Marky Dread wrote: ↑31 Mar 2025, 4:48amI wonder if Malcolm even knew who he was. God, yeah. It's one of the things I like about reading memoirs from different band members, but if you go deep enough, all those different accounts must become kind of overwhelming. We think there's such a thing as an objective truth, but even with a full time 24 hour film crew, we ain't getting it.Marky Dread wrote: ↑31 Mar 2025, 10:52amYeah I have Midge's book.
