Rude Boy Soundtrack Cassette

Post by dave202 »

Is it true that this existed and, if so, were some track played on Radio One by John Peel? I have a vague memory of a friend at the time telling me of an imminent live release he'd heard about through his "contacts" but as we were so remote from the London-centic music world at the time it was hard to know.

Is this the origin of the many bootleg 'Soundtrack' albums?

It was definitely played by John Peel, I think more than once.

Thanks, the guy who told me about the playing on John Peel's show seemed uncertain in other things at the time, so I have never been certain. It's not mentioned on the 'Keeping It Peel' site either, although that's nowhere near definitive. Peel was quoted as saying The Clash started recording a session but abandoned it, but I haven't read of him playing live tracks, so that must have been overlooked in books. (It's only a small thing compared with the amount of sessions/shows out there)

It was definitely played on Peel. I remember hearing it at the time.
June 18 1980, to be precise, Steel Pulse were also in session’
If you google that info there’s an upload of the whole show on mixcloud…

EDIT- here you go

I believe much of the ‘Rude Boy - The Director’s Cut’ bootleg cd (Snotty Snail label) is sourced from this Rude Boy Soundtrack cassette.

I’ve just stumbled across info that Rude Boy has had a new restoration done. It got some screenings in New York some months ago and was lined up for release on streaming channels. Anyone seen it?
No word on any outtakes alas, just improved image quality. Although I’m impressed with the blu Ray version I’ve got.
Some technical info on the restoration here…

it seems the new restoration is available to stream at metrograph, but that's only in the US.

Seen that some people were watching it through Amazon Prime last night. Not sure if it's only US though.

just had a scout about and can't see anything on Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com
Did notice though that the US theatrical version runs six minutes shorter than the UK one so the Metrograph version extras may only be the UK version.
Which we already have on Blu Ray anyway.

Yeah, I saw it was available on amazon prime, but the trailer you can view for free there is just the regular one, not the revamped one on the Metrograph site (with new blue title lettering)
I'm loathe to pay for it if it's only the existing version, which I already have on Blu Ray (which replaced copies on DVD, and VHS. Several versions)
Of course I'd buy a Blu Ray of the new restorationtoo, if it was available!
Strange that a UK film by a UK filmmaker, restored by a UK studio, is seemingly not available to watch anywhere.

PS interesting info about the timings. I'm sure the 'Uncut version' offers nothing new, at least to UK fans
