Any Love for Ivan Meets GI Joe?
Here's a tune that I know divides people, too disco, too Topper on the vocals blah blah blah but I have always loved it.
Wondering if any of our resident genius could have a go at a remix or dub? Just throwing it out there.
It's ok if not, we have so much wonderful music right now, fantastic remixes and incredible live mixes. It's amazing how much we have squeezed out of this band! I am thankful for all of the time and work put into giving us just a little more!

I think it's a great little song. Cheeky lyrics, nice tune and I think topper's vocal is actually pretty good. I wish they'd handed him a few other songs to sing. The cartoon lyrics for it in the Sandinista insert are also a lot of fun. Very underrated song in the catalog, imho.

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

Yeah, i think topper could definitely have done more lead vocal work on the strength of Ivan, it's a damn fine good track. It might be underrated though I'm not sure I've heard many dissing it either.

I dig it. It's thematically of a piece with the concerns on S!, but offers something a bit more light-hearted and snickering. Much prefer it to something maudlin like "Something About England."

I think it's just sort of overlooked more than disliked.Low Down Low wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 1:17pmYeah, i think topper could definitely have done more lead vocal work on the strength of Ivan, it's a damn fine good track. It might be underrated though I'm not sure I've heard many dissing it either.

Hmmmm... Maybe we should do an extensive round of polling...Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 1:18pmI dig it. It's thematically of a piece with the concerns on S!, but offers something a bit more light-hearted and snickering. Much prefer it to something maudlin like "Something About England."

Yeah that sounds fair. And I'd say the same for Version City from that record too.Flex wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 1:32pmI think it's just sort of overlooked more than disliked.Low Down Low wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 1:17pmYeah, i think topper could definitely have done more lead vocal work on the strength of Ivan, it's a damn fine good track. Who pfaffed the pfaff? Who got pfaffed tonight?

I like disco, so that doesn't turn me off about it. I like the song generally, but I do think the laser sound effects kind of get in the way.

Agreed - at least for me. I like it when I hear it but seldom make an effort to play it as a single track.

Re: Any Love for Ivan Meets GI Joe?
Although definitely not my first choice on S!, it's a song that gets a lot of love from me. I really like Topper's voice on it and it's actually one of my favorite live songs they did on the early 1982 live shows. It was kind of a weak live song in 1981 but they really got it together during the Far East Tour.

Always was a bit odd to me that Ivan never got the 12" dance single treatment

I love the Amsterdam 81 version, and I liked that key change they added to it live.SuzukiSamurai wrote: ↑30 Aug 2022, 2:08pmAlthough definitely not my first choice on S!, it's a song that gets a lot of love from me. Most of the complaints I've heard about it concern the sound effects. They are a bit overbearing at times. Good song and a great lyric by Joe.
