Clash covers

Post by Stefano1972 »

I’m finishing to prepare a playlist of Clash songs performed from other artists. I’ve included also two tracks not written by them, I Fought the Law and Revolution Rock.
This is my playlist, write me the covers i’ve forgotten.

01. Pearl Jam KNOW YOUR RIGHTS [live]
02. Manic Street Preachers WHAT’S MY NAME [live]
03. The Strokes CLAMPDOWN [live]
04. Living Colour SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO
05. Lilly Allen ft. Mick Jones STRAIGHT TO HELL
06. The Pogues LONDON CALLING [live with J.Strummer]
07. Mano Negra I FOUGHT THE LAW [live]
08. Jimmy Cliff THE GUNS OF BRIXTON
09. Rachid Taha ROCK EL CASBAH
10. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs REVOLUTION ROCK
11. The Specials SOMEBODY GOT MURDERED
12. Annie Lennox TRAIN IN VAIN
13. Chumbawamba BANKROBBER
14. Giuliano Palma STAY FREE

I haven’t included JAIL GUITAR DOORS performed live by The Primal Scream with Mick Jones at the Reading Festival ‘94 cause it seems to be impossible to find any official cd or dvd. And i don’t wish to include JIMMY JAZZ from Carla Bruni and THE GUNS OF BRIXTON from the Nouvelle Vague because i think they’re too much far from the spirit of The Clash.
Any suggestion it’s welcomed. Thanks!

Great list. I think I’ve heard most of them, and will look for the others. I love hearing Clash covers.

The first half of this video is Analogs. The second half is by Alians. Polish covers of Guns of Brixton. The Alians version (starting about 3:21) is the better of the two, in my opinion. I can’t understand the Polish lyrics, but it might be my favorite Clash cover. I'm not sure if there is an official cd version available:

The chair is against the wall. The chair is against the wall. John has a long mustache. John has a long mustache.

There's a zillion good clash covers, but I'd forgotten chunbawamba's cover of bank robber, so thanks for that. I like it a lot, but I remember when it came out CK completely trashing it, lol. Different strokes and all that.

The "This Is Rockabilly Clash" album is all great.

It's all personal preference. My favourites include:

The Lions (?) - Mag 7
Mikey Dread - Silicone on Sapphire (from Sandinista! Project)
Chuck Prophet live versions of Train in Vain, Guns of Brixton & Jimmy Jazz
Lucinda Williams - Straight to Hell

Not many people cover 'I'm Not Down' but Theo Gilmore does something special with it.

Edwyn Collins did '1977' as an exclusive for a magazine cd, Uncut I think (I'll need to go home to check).

Tom Gribbin & The Saltwater Cowboys take on Guns Of Brixton. From 1981, the first cover of a Clash song released as a single?

I have a copy of that. I think they were playing the Wembley C&W Festival and wanted a 'local song' out as a single, so did this after someone played the original to them,

I remember hearing it on the John Peel show, apparently it was a session track when John Walters was sitting in for him.
