Yeah I was aware. But this board is full of trainspotters who alert me to this type of stuff.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board
Re: Something Else (2 Takes?)
Weird, I don't remember this coming up. Is the one from the Rude Boy US DVD extras? It's not available here, but I found some uploads to various fb groups to confirm it's an alt take.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Re: Something Else (2 Takes?)
They were both shown here firstly on a show called Something Else that was then re-broadcast on a show called Sounds of the 70s on the BBC. When the BBC ran the re-broadcast they played the alternate take. I had them both on a vhs cassette that I sent to Whiteman who converted them. That's got to be getting on for well over 10 years ago. Probably closer to 15.
I don't remember this being on the Rude Boy dvd extras.

Is your copy higher quality and if so do you mind uploading it to mega? I really like this alternate takeMarky Dread wrote: ↑30 Mar 2023, 7:23pm

Hello,
Upon viewing the video, I recall seeing it a long time ago and thinking Joe's in a Lou Reed fashion phase and Paul's in a Bowie fashion phase. Joe actually looks alright inthe sunglasses.

Straight off in the first version he sings die/kill in the bridge, second version it's kill/die.

Re: Something Else (2 Takes?)
Joe's vocals vary a lot - eg. at about 1'26" in Take 1, he sings about pressing the trigger on a Thompson Gun (which isn't on the recorded version), in Take 2 it's something like 'he's going to lose it. just this once'.
The outro ad-libs are (of course) completely different too. Take 1 are all built around the phrase 'when Johnny comes marching home' which Joe repeats a bit, in Take 2 he's in full-on indecipherable ranting mode.
I'm guessing that Take 1 does indeed precede Take 2 cos Joe's voice is far more strained and cracks a lot more (in a good way) in the second version. And he seems more into it, with that looser ranting at the end.
I must confess, if we'd discussed there being two takes of this appearance before, I'd forgotten all about it! It's fun to see them, one after the other. Thanks XRCF.
And to Marky and Whiteman for compiling them all those years ago.

Just listen to the end of both takes. Completely different.
Both audio tracks are on the All the Peacemakers comp I put together. Which you should have.

It's on a dvd somewhere. But I doubt it's any better to be honest.XRCF wrote: ↑30 Mar 2023, 7:52pmIs your copy higher quality and if so do you mind uploading it to mega? I really like this alternate takeMarky Dread wrote: ↑30 Mar 2023, 7:23pm

Re: Something Else (2 Takes?)
It was on the US version (the one with this terrible cover:
).
I remember there being a to do because they took a 4:3 ratio broadcast and stretched it out to widescreen. I suspect that version is one of the ones linked because Rude Boy clips are pretty much the only Clash clips blocked on US Youtube.
(edit - here's Briggy mentioning it awhile back: viewtopic.php?p=275425#p275425)

That makes sense now. I have the UK dvd and bluray. Shame they changed the ratio.matedog wrote: ↑31 Mar 2023, 10:40amIt was on the US version (the one with this terrible cover:
