I was going to say it's the worst of the original run suggesting that CTC is the worst based on the general CTC aura of awful. But, like gambling in sports, I decided to reconsider, is the CTC album cover bad? The corrugated metal is kind of cool, the punk is a little cheesy, but kinda works. Color scheme is alright. It's a bit hamfisted, like the album itself, but I don't hate the cover. I know it nearly convinced an impressionable young Flex to make it his first Clash album, but that might not be a good argument in its favor.
CTC album cover - yay or nay?
The cover is better than the contents within, but it's still lousy. It looks like something a slick studio would produce trying to be "punk."
Favourite Clash album cover: Without hesitation, it's Rope. Bold colours and an arresting image.
Rope works best for me then the debut as it is a good zerox image in the style of the fanzines.
Cut the Crap is not as good as the This Is England sleeve for me. But it's ok(ish).
First three album covers are generally terrific. Combat Rock is the worst. Where does Sandinista rank relative to CTC?

Controversial opinion: I like the sleeve for London Calling the single more than the album.

I wouldn't fault anyone for that take. Just like a preference for any of the first three albums. London Calling itself, the photo is a little too blurry and the shadows are a little confusing. Minor complaints, but it's not a flawless cover.

Me too. I think the LC image is overrated. Take away the Elvis style font and it becomes very average. Plus a live shot for a studio album isn't so great.

What's important regards the S! sleeve is to remember it was basic to keep costs low as it was a triple album. But I'll take it over CtC.

Well, I'm not quite the free-thinking radical I thought I was.

I don't think I had heard that before. It doesn't seem dramatically different from LC (perhaps also a cost savings move) - black and white photo with limited color lettering. I believe that, just hadn't heard that before. Regardless, they probably could have done better with less for S!

It's fundamentally benign. Black and white conveys some seriousness to the contents, I suppose. CR is just lazy as fuck. Bootlegs have more imaginative artwork.

I think they did try with the packaging by including the Steve Bell cartoons and the fold out lyric sheet. It was a bit of a rush job for the actual sleeve picture. I like it but agree it could be better.

Agree regards the CR sleeve. Penny Smith took many better looking shots at that session which could've improved the sleeve.

The S! album cover has a slightly moody feel that fits the vibe of a lot of the album. I think it's a bit underrated, as these things go. The Combat Rock looks like the kind of album cover classic rock records get when they're put out as a budget line reissue for the discount bin.
Addendum: Sort of weird that it's so poor too, because I think a lot of the other aesthetic elements at the time - typography, the singles artwork and so forth - were really quite good.

I agree on both points. The CR single sleeves are very good in comparison.

How do we feel about "Rock the Casbah"'s sleeve? I'm torn. I like the playful concept (plus Bernie playing the sheik!), but there's still something kinda cheap about it that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe I'm just being jerkishly picky.

It looks so 1982 that my millenial mind can't even really comprehend it.

Well, you have to appreciate that Ronald Reagan was president and Margaret Thatcher was prime minister …
