Clash Outtakes: What we got vs. need

Post by matedog »

In an effort to make the megalist as definitive as possible, I want to include all the outtakes, some of which I believe we are lacking. Can y'all help as you can?

On the megalist, we have:
Misc Boots and Comps
*November 1976 Polydor Demos
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9PMMQ4UR
Lacks Listen which I believe was the Cap Radio officially released version.

*January 1977 Mickey Foote Demos
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LRY953OW

*March/April 1978 GEER Outtakes
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2H1Y970U

*Rat Patrol From Fort Brag
Mick's rejected version of Comback Rock (soundboard)
Lossless - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2ESTBVBD
High bitrate mp3 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=KT7M8DTS

*Cut the Crap Remixes (This is England and Fingerpoppin')
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GKSYOTT

What I just got off my lazy ass and made:
*Sandinista Outtakes (Louie Louie, Blonde RnR, and King of the Road - all according to BMC)-
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N2289JQN

What we need:
*I have a version of Clash City Rockers from FHTE 2 and what sounds like an inferior version of that from a comp someone made awhile back called "Deadly Serious". I'm not sure if these are outtakes or what - they sound quite similar but different enough from the final version. Depending on your guys' response, I will probably upload it with the alt WMHP and the Cost of Living advert for 1978 Misc Outtakes.

* The GEER outtakes supposedly lack Groovy Times, unless that was the b-side version.

*London Calling studio outakes - Mona, You Can't Judge a Woman

* I found the aforementioned Cool Confusion (with guitar and drums!), but I lack the remaining outtakes. I'd be happy to upload, but I'd prefer to clump everything from that period together if the other tunes are available.

Note - I got the S! outtakes and Cool Confusion from the Street Rats comp on the megalist. While this is a very good comp, I'd like to have the outtakes downloadable by studio session which I started doing awhile ago with the GEER outtakes, but got sidetracked/stopped.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

D.O.A. fills in the rest of the blanks, especially with the alt takes of CCR, Pressure Drop, The Prisoner, and 1-2 Crush On You. Also has got Groovy from the Rope demos.

Ugh...shame that comp is so frickin' old. The '78 stuff all runs Alvin-and-the-Chipmunks fast, the bitrate on the rip sucks, and I'm sure there's lower-gen versions to be had of some of that stuff. It served its time dutifully making that stuff available widely in a less Clash-saturated era when those tracks were really, really hard to come by...but it needs to be superseded with a lossless lower-gen upgrade at this point.

I found a DOA comp online and updated the GEER outtakes and what BMC refers to as the London Calling outtakes which sound like soundchecks to me. All that remains is the Essential/W10 Soundtrack.

That's all mixed in on the expanded 2-disc RP set upgrade that's M'listed.

I don't remember where I heard or read this, but does a alternate take of Groovy Times exist, with electric guitars?

That'll be the version from the GEER demos.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

The Rat Patrol download that's listed as "soundboard" - is this the "Walk Evil Talk/RCA tape" one that starts with Beautiful People and Kill Time? The one where the first four songs are excellent quality, but the rest of the CD is the same cassette transfer that's been floating around forever?

Or does this have good quality sound on all the songs? I'll flip my lid if there's an mp3 of the 7-minute version of Sean Flynn that sounds as good as the first few songs on that "RCA tape" version of Rat Patrol.
Sit on my lap, I'm sober! - cretin
Dylan can never care about anything, not a troublesome woman, not a beleagured workingman, not a fingerless glove or sleeveless jacket, as much as Andrew WK cares about partying. - Silent Majority

Sorry, no, there is no complete low generation tape of Rat Patrol in circulation. Just the "RCA" tape.

Some bootleg companies have tried to remaster the rest to match the first four RCA tracks.
Another Combat Rock is an improvement but you can still hear the quality drop-off on the other songs.

If somebody, somewhere has the original low gen tape, why not let it out? It's better than letting fans hear a crappy version of the album.
Unless a house move is on the cards in the near future?

Yes. A cassette straight from the master at Electric Lady. I've heard it but don't have it. But life is (hopefully) long.

No, I really don't think Mick would be in favor of a release. But a story that he only recently obtained a digitized copy from a cassette would be true and not myth-making. He did have acetetes before. Oh, and the Vanilla tapes story is true as well.

At a push I can believe the Vanilla Tapes incident, but what about Shea and Hell W10? They begin to wear a bit thin, these serendipitous moments.
And if it's never gonna get a release, why not make that digitized copy a little present for the fans? Fuck, we deserve it.
