Favorite S/T songs?
Favorite S/T songs?
I've been obsessed with the S/T lately, and am wondering what the general consensus around here is about its best songs.
I remember that a shockingly few amount of S/T songs cracked the top 20 on that old poll that I referred to a few posts ago. I seem to remember that none were in the top 10...is that right? It's crazy to think that, but I also sorta understand. On my forever evolving 1-disc Best of the Clash mix, I only have 2 S/T songs (Police and Theives, Garageland), and they are the two longest on the album -- I think the fact that most barely crack 2 minutes is why they dont seem as essential as others. But really, almost every song is essential.
So what are your favorite 5-or-so S/T songs?
1. Janie Jones
2. White Riot
3. Police and Theives
4. 48 Hours
5. Garageland
No surprises from me, except 48 Hours, which is really just a flavor-of-the-month pick. Still, that must have been one of the most fun ones to scream along to at the early shows. It still feels like a crime to exclude ISBWUSA, LB, CO, and H&W. This album, more than the others, is the one that is hardest to condense for 'Best of' purposes, if you ask me -- easily has the highest frequency of classics.

I went out and got drunk on cheap American beer. The bar played Cheat and Protex Blue. By alcohol-related default, they became the two greatest songs in history to me.

Re: Favorite S/T songs?
I'm coming clean - I don't really like much beyond Janie Jones, White Riot, Career Opps, and Garageland. I don't mind the other songs, they just don't do much for me. I appreciate P&T but god is it long. Even live I usually skip it after two or three minutes. 48 Hours (party! it's the weekend yeah!), Protex Blue (sounds way too 76 Clash), and Deny are probably the weakest cuts.
That being said, I probably listen to it more than GEER.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
