The Call Up Poll
The "Marmite" of Clash songs, people seem to love it or hate it. It came on unexpectedly in the bar I was in tonight and it gave me immense pleasure, I even found myself dancing. It was a strange decision to release it as the lead-off single from Sandinista, though sacrificing commercial success for the "message" was a pretty brave move.
I've also noticed a lot of chicks seem to like this song.

For some strange reason it always sounds better to me when not listening to it on Sandinista.

Good song, goofy vidya.

I like the song, but it's no veal cutlet.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Video mix is a lot better than the album mix; borrows a little more from The Cool Out (which was by far the best).
Live, sucked. Lame and lifeless. And unlike Washington Bullets they just wouldn't surrender and take it out of the set...just kept running it out there, even on the Terry Tour. That's an instant-skip one.

I agree with you about the live situation, the Bonds versions are terrible, but some of the Terry Tour renditions are ok. There's a great '82 version where Joe affects a Yorkshire accent and starts talking about stotty cakes or something.

Good song as an album track, but not single worthy.

Re: The Call Up Poll
I was a lot more impressed with it when I was 13 or so, but the luster has worn off a bit (as is often the case). I still enjoy it, but its moved down in the rankings from "kick-ass song of note" to "solid album material".
Also, I think someone (maybe me?) posted a cover version of the song with a female lead singer and a pretty slick video which I think edged out the original slightly on music and considerably on video quality.

I really like the song, especially when I'm driving at 3 in the morning. It's a very atmospheric number.
I even like whichever Bonds version is the soundboard. I find Mick's guitar intro very catchy.

Re: The Call Up Poll
I liked everything about the single when it came out including the sleeve and, dare I say, the B side. I agree with the comment above about The Cool Out being better. The 12" 4 track single with Mag 7/Mag Dance/Call Up/Cool Out was a good release.

Observation: Cool Out isn't even the best song with "Cool Out" in the title. Cool n Out fucking smokes.

Re: The Call Up Poll
I like the Call Up. I find it's at it's best loud with the bass high and in a mix that contains driving rock 'n' roll.
