What do we think this song is about?

I think it's about 6 or 7 minutes :) Woof!

Great question - I hope someone has some insight.

And another thing...

Is the lyric when the vocoder first comes in really "sweet soul sister meets John from Leicester", as widely reported on the internet?

I don't think it's "John from Leicester" no idea what it would be though

Pretty sure this bit is wrong too:
Call out the hitmen
Mercy make him stop and realize

Sounds like:
Call out the hitmen mercenaries don't they realise

Then again, I listened to a walkman for years with the volume way to high for years and years and now have cloth ears.

No, you are right, Oliver. The song itself is about gentrification and the clampdown. Whenever the powers that be decide, they can and will “terrorize.” Like the British army weighing fifteen hundred tons.

Thanks, Teddy. It's obvious now I know. I feel a bit stupid for asking.

So 'John from Leicester' would work. But it's not, is it?

(Perhaps I'm just not especially fond of Leicester.)

Bicester would work better than Leicester. Just saying.

That's what I got out of it, via, "And the man who wants to stand for his piece of land/Is pushed aside/'Cause he don't quite fit/Tryin' to make him quit," which is one of the other lyrics that stood out for me. I always liked the extended coda, too, which reinforces the slow burn mood of this song quite well. Would have made a cracking addition to the live set at the time -- ah, well.

They did play it sometimes. I heard them play it in Sheffield in '91. It seems, from Esmark's resource, that they played it on one of the nights at the T & C that year too. I must have gone on the other night, as I distinctly only remember them playing it once.

I remember the first time hearing this track and how jarring that vocoder part is when it just comes out of nowhere. Very nice effect.

I didn't appreciate this song as much as i should have when it first came out, l did like it but one i used to skip but i really love it now.

I have seen them do this live and i cant be 100% sure where but T&C did came to mind . I do remember the bomb dropping part bouncing around the place in stereo and thinking how cool that was.
