Big Audio Dynamite - F Punk
Is anyone a fan of this disc? The other day I was browsing through a record store and found a copy of BAD's F Punk for only a couple of dollars so I picked it up. I'm not the biggest BAD fan (although I like their first album) but I like I Turned Out A Punk so I got it. Anyways, I actually like a lot of the songs on this - Get It All From My TV, Pyscho Wing, Singapore to name a few. It seems that many people don't think it was one of BAD's better efforts but I enjoy it.

The very notion that anyone could like this album better than Tighten Up or Megatop makes me sad.
I thought it was awful.

Gonna Try and Psycho Wing are two of BAD's best tracks ever, far as I'm concerned. The cover of Suffragette City's pretty tight too. I spin those pretty frequently actually. A lot of people hate the production on it but it works for those songs (and is completely out of place on most of the others)ClashCityRocker wrote:Is anyone a fan of this disc? I haven't listened to the CD start-to-finish since 1996. It's got its good points (mostly listed above), a lot of "eh" stuff, and the really awful stuff (Vitamin C) is so over-the-top "eh" that it takes the fun out of hating it.

I'd say this analysis is pretty much right. I sort of like "I Turned Out a Punk" because it's not punk at all.Still216 wrote:Gonna Try and Psycho Wing are two of BAD's best tracks ever, far as I'm concerned. I Turned Out A Punk was 1995's "All The Young Dudes"! Well, minus the Bowie connection, but they saved that for the secret track.Flex wrote:I sort of like "I Turned Out a Punk" because it's not punk at all.

Re: Big Audio Dynamite - F Punk
lThis record got something
With a good drummer it could be 100 times better.....
I was personnaly very very very disapointed by "HIgher power" so i enjoyed a lot F Punk when i found (i didn't even know at the time that this record exist).
I really like the "i turned..." Lyrics and the end of the song with the beatbox (and the US mix is a bit better)
Except "Got To Set Her Free" and "I Can't Go On Like This" that i particulary don't like at all the album is pretty right
It seems that nobody like Vitamin C but i do.
The sound could be better
I mean they tried to do sort of "live punk" sound right ?
It could be more rough you know

Re: Big Audio Dynamite - F Punk
It's a very average album lacking in ideas which is a shame because one thing BAD always had was ideas sometimes the idea was better than the content, this doesn't come anywhere near the early albums but the Bowie cover is o.k. the tuning on the end of the album always makes me smile.
Some of this album is very close to Cut the crap territory but without the tunes.
Reappraisal : I like this album much more these days and through listening to various live shows I appreciate the songs a hell of a lot more.

I think it's a pretty decent album, that could've done with a slightly improved sound. Some good tunes, personally I like Vitamin C as well, and some not so good one. Should've been an EP, or complete it with the best tracks off EANR.

Re: Big Audio Dynamite - F Punk
I think the reason that I like this album is because there is more guitar on it than the other BAD songs I've heard and it's more of a back to basics thing. I haven't really listened to much of their back catalog (except for This Is BAD and Planet BAD Greatest Hits) but I know that most of their songs feature heavy sampling which I don't particularly like all that much. There are some songs on F Punk that I don't like but overall I think there is more good songs than bad.
One record I've always wanted to hear is Tighten Up,Vol.88? How is that one?

One of their best, and way better than fPunk.... Not that much samples, some, but oh.. well get it, I don't think you'll be disappointed.ClashCityRocker wrote: One record I've always wanted to hear is Tighten Up,Vol.88? How is that one?

Re: Big Audio Dynamite - F Punk
Mick usually does a production 'theme' with each B.A.D. album, and this one was kind of a messy punk-production fusion with the standard danceable B.A.D. Noble concept that did work on a couple tracks, but terrible execution overall. The production is absolute mud and sucks all the enjoyment out of it because it's so grimy and clouded. I don't think it sounds at all like Cut The Crap, but that is sort-of the appropriate analogy where the over-layering of the same instruments just murks the works up to spit.
Not the most inspired batch of songs, either, despite a couple more-than-serviceable tunes. He seemed to still be stuck in his Higher Power-era drought. And, yes, the terrible drumming was B.A.D. II's achilles heel and got painfully exposed by the more 'analog' arrangements on the album. Both songwriting and ideal/balanced band sound didn't really hit their stride again until Entering A New Ride, so unfortunately it's still a document (like Higher Power) of B.A.D. II+ really fumbling around for its proper mid-90's identity.
I'd like to hear some live playings of this material...I bet it would improve the songs' quality dramatically by not having to lug around the studio versions' prohibitive production handicap.

Re: Big Audio Dynamite - F Punk
F-Punk is probably my most played BAD album. Though a couple of songs don't work that great, I don't think there's a song on it I dislike. Gonna Try, I Turned Out A Punk, Get It All From My TV, Singapore and Psycho Wing are all really solid songs. The rest is at least decent. I even like Vitamin C and It's A Jungle Out There, which seem to be the most hated tracks off it.
It was also one of the first BAD albums I got, which might have something to do with it. I believe all I had before this was the Greatest Hits and The Globe.

So far i havent heard a single big audio dynamite song i havent liked. And i loved all the ones i have heard from f punk.
Re: Big Audio Dynamite - F Punk
F-Punk is a awesome name for an album by mick though, brilliant.
I actually recently picked it up myself. It sounds ok to me. I have not had time to really listen to it yet though. And I am convinced there is gold in there somewhere. once I've listened to it a couple of times etc.
edit: spelling retard.
