Rob Peter Pay Paul

Post by appleseed »

One of you folks who have Mick's ear, please thank him for me for writing this song. I can't overstate how impressed I am by it. I feel like it was written for me. Mick was already my favorite musician, but when I heard this on Jimmy Fallon my jaw dropped open. It gave me goosebumps and misty eyes. I was just so overwhelmed by it--from the lyrics to the riffs to Mick's solo--and thankful and happy for BAD to be back with a great song that captures our times so perfectly. I'm not surprised because this is the kind of music that Mick's always written, and that's made The Clash and BAD such a fundamental part of my life. Still, I wasn't expecting an absolute lightning bolt like this song. In the few days since I've heard it I've listened to it over and over. It's a new favorite. Job well done, guys.

*sniff* I really can't listen to this song without getting emotional. I absolutely love it. Can any of you lend me a hand with a couple of lyrics I can't quite make out?

Some people got everything, some nothing at all.

I took this profession 'cause I had no choice at all.
When I spoke you wouldn't listen, wouldn't answer when I called.

Tried to go straight, couldn't quite make it.
You don't treat me fair, said I gotta take it. I'm gonna take it all.
If you're gonna rob Peter, you better pay Paul.

I got my pride. I wanna stand tall.
'Cause lifting you up has been my downfall.
If you're gonna rob Peter, you better pay Paul.

Where is the justice? What happened to the law?
?

My TV is laughing, making me feel small.
I'm sitting in this cell. I clearly see it all.
I can see your name, scratched up on the wall.

I got my pride. I wanna stand tall.
'Cause lifting you up has been my downfall.
If you're gonna rob Peter, you better pay Paul.

Where is the justice? What happened to the law?
You're talking about fallout. I'm thinking civil war.

Passing 'round the plate. Me, I had to fake it.
You lay down the law, said I gotta take it. I'm gonna break 'em all.
If you're gonna rob Peter, you better pay Paul.

I got my pride. I wanna stand tall.
Cause lifting you up has been my downfall.
If you're gonna rob Peter, you better pay Paul.

I think you're right, Oliver. Thanks! Now if we can figure out that first bit. I want to say it's "tell me another question -- who's he working for?" That doesn't seem quite right, though.

you might be right... it's a little clearer on the jimmy Fallon performance but still not conclusive to my cloth-ears

I think I hear "let me ask the question, who's he working for?" on some other boot I have

It's called the sun. New-world innovation you guys probably haven't heard of yet.

Delay pedal makes a welcome appearance at 3:25. He needs to keep milking that thing until it gets stuck and causes Joe to stick his thumb in his right ear from beyond the grave, but I like where this is trending overall.

They played this last night and it just keeps getting tighter and tighter. A fantastic song that fit right in with all their classics in the set.

I'm patiently waiting for a review of the LA gig.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board
