I think I put the Stone Thames thing together after Mick introduced it live one day as a song about Rock Hudson

I didnt make the Aids connection at first but I do remember thinking ha stone thames is like rock hudson.
I am surprised though that this is not common knowledge especially at this forum as nearly every interview or review of "This is" would have stone thames explicitly explained at the time.

The Aids connection jumped out at me straight away, it's pretty explicit in the lyrics. I didn't suss out the Stone Thames/Rock Hudson thing for years though, and it was certainly never mentioned in any reviews/interviews I read at the time.NoMoreHugh wrote:I didnt make the Aids connection at first but I do remember thinking ha stone thames is like rock hudson.

Aids was only discovered in early 80's and in 85 it was still poorly understood so well done for being ahead of the game and to be honest I am surprised by the fact that I am the only one to read about stone Thames on more than one occasion. It was almost like one clever journalist got that gem from Mick and all the others journalists felt it important to mention it too.
For me it was annoying as I wanted to understand more about the other songs that also featured on the album as well.

I'd also credit Stone Thames for mentioning Ecstasy three years before it became a widespread phenomenon in Britain.

1983 - It was discovered that a number of people in the UK had developed AIDS following blood transfusions. This problem particularly affected haemophiliacs, whose condition made them dependent on blood products. The Mail on Sunday ran a story about 'killer blood' in UK hospitals, describing how two male haemophiliacs had discovered that they had AIDS after routine blood transfusions. On TV, a Horizon documentary entitled 'The Killer in the Village'” and a BBC Panorama special on AIDS were both screened. The British media were starting to pay more attention to AIDS.NoMoreHugh wrote:Aids was only discovered in early 80's and in 85 it was still poorly understood so well done for being ahead of the game and to be honest I am surprised by the fact that I am the only one to read about stone Thames on more than one occasion. I think Rock Hudson dying was actually the moment when everyone began to take notice.

This is true. It took a celebrity dying to make it real to the media. Prior to that, it was just a bunch of unknown homosexual deviants. But now it was someone whom so many thought was both heterosexual and a sex symbol. Actually rather telling about how things become "real" via the media.Heston wrote:I think Rock Hudson dying was actually the moment when everyone began to take notice.

This was the real shock for a lot of people that Rock was a Hollywood hearthob who had hid his sexuality.Dr. Medulla wrote:This is true. It took a celebrity dying to make it real to the media. As I recall, it was also a weird moment for the Reagans, who were friends with Rock Hudson, but were conspicuously unsympathetic to other AIDS victims. But then they were always good at employing a double standard for themselves and their friends versus everyone else.Marky Dread wrote:This was the real shock for a lot of people that Rock was a Hollywood hearthob who had hid his sexuality.Dr. Medulla wrote:This is true. It was very sad as peoples ignorance led to an increase in homophobia.Dr. Medulla wrote:As I recall, it was also a weird moment for the Reagans, who were friends with Rock Hudson, but were conspicuously unsympathetic to other AIDS victims. This is why I think it's hilarious that everyone panicking about Ebola is criticizing Obama for his lack of action. It took St. Ronnie what, six years to even mention AIDS? And it was actually something people needed to be genuinely afraid of getting, unlike Ebola.Dr. Medulla wrote:As I recall, it was also a weird moment for the Reagans, who were friends with Rock Hudson, but were conspicuously unsympathetic to other AIDS victims.
