The Singles Box Promo

Post by Red Angel »

When the box with 19 CD-singles came out, Sony released a 4-CD promo with all the tracks contained in the box. The reference version is the European one so no "The Cost Of Living Advert" which is only on the Japanese box. No booklet, only the jewel case and the four discs, as in the photo. Why hasn't Sony released an official 4 CD (obviously with "The Cost Of Living Advert") including some other rarities and a nice booklet?

I like the box set as it is, although clearly it should have included the advert. Some of the CDs are great mini albums in their own right. Having said that, the 4 CD version looks great and no doubt I would buy it.

I'm convinced some tracks from the Radio Clash 12" are sourced from vinyl.

I'll have to listen. Do they sound a bit scratchy?

No nothing of the sort. I just know from looking at the wav file. The two "Radio Clash" tracks would've been remastered from the masters ages before. But "Outside Broadcast and Radio 5" had not been out on cd before. You can tell they are from a vinyl source because the wav file has no peaks and troughs (highs & lows) and has been pushed up to maximize the sound to match the other two tracks.

Thank you, sounds both logical and beyond my technical know how!

'Outside Broadcast' is on the 'Dread Meets B-Boys Downtown' CD compilation. Although it's such an eclectic selection I'll bet the bulk of these are sourced from vinyl...

Yep I've got that. Not a clash release as such. The first time those 4 tracks from the 12" were released together on cd was the singles box. Interesting also they didn't appear on the SS box.

But what could an official release have other than the promo? Definitely the following:

- Addition of 'The Cost Of Living Advert'
- Addition of cd single 'Return To Brixton'
- 'Radio One (extended version)' instead of the shorter one
- 'Cool Confusion' (7” mix) instead of that other
- 'This Is England' (alt. version) 7" A-side Holland (withdrawn)

and other editions or b-sides at will from all over the world:

Years ago when the CD singles box first came out I won a drawing sponsored by Sony for a free copy, but then they never sent to me and never responded to any of my further emails asking about it. Oh well.

I got a good copy of this promo edition from a friend, I can say that it is a good collector's item and useful for listening to the tracks in the box without changing the disc too many times. I am quite satisfied with that. ;)

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Anyone got the singles box in FLAC? I'd be happy to donate to a charity or something. Otherwise I have to buy it just to rip it and then keep the CDs in a cupboard for 40 years and then they get thrown out by whomever deals with my estate
