No, No, Don't Worry. Racism is Pretty Much Over.

It seems a bit tenuous to be honest, but I enjoyed this quote:

"I am disinclined to take lectures on racial sensitivity from a group that insists on calling black people, 'Colored,' " Mark Williams, national spokesman of the Tea Party Express, told CNN.
*facepalm*
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I caught a little Olbermann the other night (I know, I know), and he head a spokesperson from the NAACP on who I thought did an excellent job discussing the issue and explaining what they're talking about.

The clip is here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/ns/ ... /#38215166

I'll have to give that a watch later. And don't get me wrong, I'm quite certain most tea party members are racist even if not overtly so. Just the reasons given in the article are not as strong as I would like.

How reputable is the NAACP these days? I've always revered it for its history, but I'm not sure how important it is these days.

I'm actually surprised that the article portrays the NAACP's argument as basically resting on a few particular instances/signs/etc. In the Olbermann interview, the NAACP spokesperson kind of makes a special point about how those are just some overt examples and really the issue is that the Tea Party is about maintaining and expanding white privilege, and that as a nation we need to start having open discussions about how our society and insitutions can be structurally racist without folks actually going around saying "I hate black people".

This looks like a bit of a hack job from CNN to me.

They're still pretty respected as a fairly mainstream institution, I think. They're not generally "radical" enough or whatever for a lot of the circles I read, but that's not necessarily and negative or anything.

Well that makes sense.

That's kind of what I assumed.

Racism isn't over, but white people are no more racist than the next ethnic group.

That's probably true. What's different is that white people are the ones with the real power.

And the institutional racism built into thousands of aspects of our lives has never really been addressed in any adult and substantive manner.

I'm sure a few of the folks in this article referring to the children of immigrants as "anchor babies" are the usual pro-war right-to-lifers, to understate the case.

Conservative, self-declared patriots insist that carrying a pregnancy to term is a woman's God-given obligation, but then attempt to defile an entire population of innocent newborns as tools of trickery.

Deport these newborns! they say. Banish these babies!

What God are these people praying to? What version of Jesus have they conjured up to demonize innocent children?
