Van der Graaf Generator are the gods of prog as far as I'm concerned. Beyond that, Crimson rules, Gabriel-era Genesis is quite good, Yes have three decent albums, I don't really like ELP. Camel is pretty good, as is Caravan and much of the Canterbury scene. I think I'm the only Floyd fan here. Krautrock rules, especially Can. Their Soon Over Babaluma record is underrated.

Give me some input and I'll better tailor the recommendations. Also Wolter is a good source for recs.
A couple more I like quite a bit:
La Düsseldorf - s/t
Harmonia - Deluxe
Cluster - Zuckerzeit

I'm a big (by normie standards, modest by Floyd standards) Floyd fan.

I like Animals. The rest of them have too many tracks I don't dig. I guess Piper is good too but it seems like a different band.

How come I get shit for KISS but people can freely admit to liking Pink Floyd without fear of a public backlash?

Can't we hate both? Because I hate both.

Also, it's a new week. What's the new question/opinion, Westway?

Would Spirit of Radio by Rush be classified as Prog Rock? I love that one but hate Rush in general.
I would say they tried to transform themselves from prog to radio friendly rock and at some point to something even more awful.
Um.. Spirit of Radio is not prog. Its also quite awesome. I'd say Rush were very easy to make fun of in the 70s, that they've definitely got 3 songs from 80-81 that are good or at least fun (Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer and Limelight) and that the "something even more awful" comment is a perfect description of them post-1982.
Yes. Rush got awful once Geddy Lee figured out how to play keyboards with his feet.

Also (and this isn't a bad thing), does anyone else think that early SST-era Husker Du sounds a bit like Rush played at 45rpm?

I mean, I haven't listened to Pink Floyd in over half a decade I'd wager. When's the last time you listened to KISS?

I have a love/hate thing with Floyd. I think they've done some good stuff. I love Gilmour's guitar playing - one of my faves. I like the early stuff with Syd and then I like the Dark Side/WYWH/Animals era. The Wall is a bit too much - though it has some good songs. After that it's hit and miss. Same goes for the post-Syd/pre-Dark Side years - some good songs...some brilliantly weird stuff, but also way too much that has not aged well.

I've started to explore Can - but it's going to take some solid listening before I can give a decent opinion.

Okay...for this week's opinion/question...let's go to the opposite side of the musical spectrum: 70's singer-songwriters. I do have a soft spot for certain musicians of this era/genre because my mom and dad listened to them...but I can also see why they sometimes get labeled as ineffectual, insipid wienie old hippies. Where do you stand? Do you like any of them - and if so - who?

I like Jackson Browne's early albums - same with James Taylor. I really like Gordon Lightfoot. I cannot stand John Denver.

Actually...I should probably throw that whole Laurel Canyon scene into the mix...just so I can express my dislike for The Eagles as people - even if I like some of their earlier songs.

The only one that I can think of off-hand who I dig is Paul Simon. I don't hate the genre, I suppose; it generally bores me. At the same time, I dislike intensely Jann Wenner, so his ardent promotion of 70s singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne doesn't do it any favours.
