I'd rather be a Borg than a Democrat!
Aren't you already? Robot and basically a Commie because you hate the freedom bestowed by the market, plus you would have been really boring on Voyager.

I haven't seen this ep in ages—why were they not a threat at that time? Were they in hiding or something?
I don't think they'd been seen since Best of Both Worlds. They're a threat, yes, but an “omigosh if we don't act now and in this radical way” threat? No way. In the TNG sphere, BoBW pretty much ends the Borg's immediate threat, and the next couple encounters don't make them out to be that dire. Picard and Riker go into a crisis mode like Americans who thought the US needed to nuke Moscow asap.
Was the ep written by a newbie or something?

Wikipedia says René Echevarria, so no. Just hazarding a guess, but I wonder if that's a problem that's greater with episodic shows rather than serial. DS9 did a much better job with its characters, in terms of consistency and sensible growth, because most episodes were part of a purposeful narrative, building to something. So quality control had to be tighter. Episodic would seem to be structurally looser, with room to ignore or add what the writer wants. Just a theory, anyway.

That's only because the unreconstructed Bones is clearly irritated by Spock being a product of miscegenation.

Look, Sarek is one of the good ones, but Amanda should stick to her own kind.

I misjudge you. I'd have thought you would have strung up Sarek for even looking at her. You are, sir, a product of the New South.

Crap, that's pretty damned good. A tad too growly, but overall excellent. I can't wait for that DS9 documentary.

I mean...if you count “being Shatner” as being in character.
