Is anyone afraid of bikers anymore? They are basically a cosplay crowd at this point, right?

There were a bunch of Hell's Angels volunteers at the SF marathon. Super nice and helpful.Wolter wrote: ↑15 Mar 2019, 10:32amPretty much.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑15 Mar 2019, 10:12am

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I ride a motorcycle and most of the guys I ride with are nerds. We go out early, ride a nice countryside route and then get lunch at a diner. I think, and I think my friends agree, that Harleys are overpriced pieces of garbage.Wolter wrote: ↑15 Mar 2019, 10:32amPretty much.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑15 Mar 2019, 10:12am

A few blocks from my house, there's a Biker's Church, which did a lot to shatter the bad-ass mystique of the biker to me.

I worked with a lot of bikers when I worked in child abuse prevention. They were big softies.

What many or most non-riders consistently get wrong is assuming that the motorcycle community is homogeneous, and it's definitely not.
I have nothing in common with the Harley-riding morons (my friends and I call them pirates because of their cosplay costumes). Nor do I have any kinship with the Honda Gold Wing dudes who are riding essentially 2-wheeled Honda Civics (they even have a reverse gear, FFS!) with bitchin' stereo systems and cup holders for the rider and passenger.
I have more affinity with the sports bike crowd, but not with the wheelie-popping and other dangerous stunts they pull.
I ride a moderately powered, dual sport machine, mostly for commuting, but I have taken it off-road a bit.
And then I also ride a pure dirt bike with extreme knobby tires that can handle pretty much any kind of off-road conditions.
These are just examples of some of the many sub-cultures of motorcycle riders.
And then there's the nerdy Beaner crowd, which is probably the Silent Majority of the motorcycle community.

It is so satisfying when someone sets up the use of that line.

Re: The Trump observations thread
The good economy predictor, to me, is seriously confounded by the fact that he lost the popular vote by 3M and has done nothing to win over those who didn't vote for him before (he seems more inclined to antagonize them). Both of those aspects are distinct from previous presidents.Flex wrote: ↑22 Mar 2019, 3:11pmOn the "Trump Electability" front: https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics ... ction-odds

Re: The Trump observations thread
Mueller Report is done. Submitted to AG. Barr says he'll be able to share some info with Congress by this weekend.
I really don't know what to expect. I'm not allowing myself to hope for much. I've really built it up in my mind - but now that it is finally here - I'm finding that I'm feeling cynical. My hope has always been that it drives a stake through Trump's presidency because I've wanted that to happen so desperately, but I also can't shake the feeling that rats know how to survive - sometimes just through sheer luck.

One thing that has been revealed along the way, however, is that the Trump gang are a bunch of morons. They're crooks, but they aren't clever. They worked under the (not incorrect) assumption that everyone else they deal with is a crook, so there's no need to be all that smart. I'm not saying I think the report will be some kind of open-mouthed slamdunk, but there's no reason to believe that it will be wanting for evidence.WestwayKid wrote: ↑22 Mar 2019, 5:42pmMueller Report is done. No more indictments per the report from DOJ. The SDNY investigation is still going on, tho.WestwayKid wrote: ↑22 Mar 2019, 5:42pmMueller Report is done. Submitted to AG. Barr says he'll be able to share some info with Congress by this weekend.
