Re: Music opinion/question of the week...
Continuing from Matey's point, I think a lot of the discussion about "appropriation" (especially online) is actually a critique of capitalism, consumerism and exploitation, but is being framed exclusively as an identity issue for some weird reason.
From my semi-qualified perspective (my doctoral thesis was on intercultural mixing and identity), I'd suggest there's a long history of productive cultural encounter on all sides with new and interesting ideas emerging (and, on the other hand, the Bosstones) from these interactions.
On the subject of music specifically, I'd suggest someone like Elvis wasn't a rich white kid copying black people's music and slapping together a merch empire. He was emulating the music he loved. The fact that he became immensely wealthy and popular while the black musicians who originated the form toiled in relative obscurity, and sometimes poverty, is more an indictment of exclusion and systemic inequality in America. IMO, even if he was an opportunistic huckster looking for a quick buck, the issue of appropriation would benefit from a renewed focus on exclusion and inequality/the conditions that elevate and marginalize certain peoples and communities, rather than telling people off for enjoying his music like some sort of asshole.

Re: Music opinion/question of the week...
I agree with the points raised here. Plus you have to throw Colonel Tom Parker into the mix regards Elvis. Let's not also forget that it's no strict black / white divide issue as it's often perceived to be. Lots of great black artists became very wealthy playing rock n roll / Rhythm & Blues / Soul etc.Inder wrote: ↑07 May 2019, 8:43pmContinuing from Matey's point, I think a lot of the discussion about "appropriation" (especially online) is actually a critique of capitalism, consumerism and exploitation, but is being framed exclusively as an identity issue for some weird reason.

Re: Music opinion/question of the week...
Very much agree with Inder here, especially about the confused nature of what is actually being critiqued. As well, placing to the two positions on opposite points on a spectrum, of integration/borrowing on one and segregation on the other, the latter ends up sitting nicely with Nazism and other hardcore racial politics. I'm not suggesting that if a person has a heightened sensitivity to cultural appropriation then they're buddies with Richard Spencer, but it's worth appreciating the stagnation that that position must lead to followed faithfully. Human beings are social and they're curious and creative. We benefit from that.Inder wrote: ↑07 May 2019, 8:43pmContinuing from Matey's point, I think a lot of the discussion about "appropriation" (especially online) is actually a critique of capitalism, consumerism and exploitation, but is being framed exclusively as an identity issue for some weird reason.

I can't remember if I linked to this the last appropriation came up, but Korla Pandit's story is fascinating and kind of hilarious.

Re: Music opinion/question of the week...
I heard someone listening to The Doors last weekend and was struck by how awful I know find them. Crap poetry set to crap music. Yes - they are held up as absolute masters of rock. I'm certain the cult of Jim Morrison is largely responsible for that. He's seen by many as a cool leather pants wearing rebel who was more hip poet than rock singer. The reality - at least in my opinion - is that he was an obnoxious drunk and his "poetry" was 10th grade high school English class garbage. Yes, I went through my Doors phase when I was about 12-13, but I'm thankful I grew out of it. I will admit (however) that LA Woman is pretty good jam.

I respect their place within the larger cultural history of late 60s California and youth rebellion, but their music bores the hell out of me. The only way it could be worse is if Clapton joined them and did dueling solos with Manzarek.

Always disliked the Doors. Not quite as much as Ku Klux Klapton, but they're up there with Pink Floyd on my overrated shitlist. .
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board
