ROUND 15 - THE FINALS - I
Re: ROUND 15 - THE FINALS - I
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I don't know. The impression I got was that more people participated in the BAD voting, but Joe generated more ardent advocacy for one song or another. My guess is that, gun to the head, the division would be pretty close to 50-50.

I honestly think it might be the best song up there for me. Top 3 certainly.

I actually think more people prefer BAD on here but the Joe camp (mine) is more openly opinionated.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑11 Jul 2019, 4:47pmI don't know. BAD actually having a bunch of albums, all of which have been pretty easy to find on CD, vinyl or digitally for several decades, probably helps the voting. With Joe you have one solo full length that's mostly been OOP, 3 late-period (great) Meskies albums and then an assortment of hard-to-find shit of extremely variable style and quality. Say what you will about BAD, but they had an aesthetic and they stuck to it -and did the traditional "put out LPs full of material" thing - which makes it feel more like comparing apples to apples when you get to voting.
I love Joe's catalog (hence volunteering for the polling) but even I was having trouble sifting through all the four volumes of his soundtrack & comp work.
Also also, it strikes me we may be running into some polling fatigue. It's hard to muster up convo about the relative merits of various songs for like 3 months straight.

Or at least more people secretly prefer BAD but think it's not as legitimate an heir to the Clash as what Joe did. Which, admittedly, might have some merit.Wolter wrote: ↑11 Jul 2019, 4:50pmI actually think more people prefer BAD on here but the Joe camp (mine) is more openly opinionated.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑11 Jul 2019, 4:47pmI don't know. I've thoroughly enjoying the polls and don't mind a little bickering here and there. The voting and conversation seems just as bountiful as the BAD polls.Flex wrote: ↑11 Jul 2019, 5:08pmBAD actually having a bunch of albums, all of which have been pretty easy to find on CD, vinyl or digitally for several decades, probably helps the voting. Re: ROUND 15 - THE FINALS - I
While the format plays it's tricks, MB and IH may not be worth serious consideration (although, subjectively speaking, I strongly disagree with that assertion) but it's not clear to me that they kingslayed anything more worthy from contention. EW and the Meskie's non-album tracks were both pretty scattershot affairs - even more so than something like Cut the Crap, as it turns out. It's a limitation of the format (I suppose), but it shouldn't really functionally prevent the best 3-5 songs from rising to the top.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑11 Jul 2019, 3:35pmIH and MB are the only ones that stick out to me as not really worth serious consideration. All told, I think the group did a solid job in confirming the cream.
In the end, i think every entry here is among Joe's best (even if not each one was my personal fave), so I have no complaints.
the HUGE limitation I see is that this format didn't allow Coma Girl to compete in the finals, since I think it could have finished second or third in voting despite losing by a few votes to GDM. Not sure any other songs have really been denied a shot at glory like that.
Or, GDM gets bounced in a few rounds and I revise that position, but given its traction I think GDM is going all the way.

I blame you for not shutting down the voting when it was tied. Or at least adhering to Stalin's advice that who votes isn't what counts, it's who counts the votes.Flex wrote: ↑11 Jul 2019, 5:18pmthe HUGE limitation I see is that this format didn't allow Coma Girl to compete in the finals, since I think it could have finished second or third in voting despite losing by a few votes to GDM. It, Trash City, and Yalla Yalla would be my final three of what we have. I'd also be good with Trash City winning. It's the opposite of GDM in style and content, but perfectly done garage rock.
