Fables of the Reconstruction is their best one overall, imo, tho it's the slimmest for obvious singles.
It’s the Most Southern album I know of. Not the most country. The most Southern. It just *feels* like humid nights and Spanish moss.
Southern Gothic, definitely. (Weird that they went to England to record it.)
England is a dark mysterious place.
My understanding is that it's 89% moors, 11% fish and chips.
England is yours and it owes you a living.

I like this song and "It's the End of the World as We Know It", other than that I haven't liked much else of what I've heard but honestly haven't delved into their catalog. They were touted by too many hippie types that I didn't really care for so I never did much discovering of their catalog and I genuinely hate some of their stuff.
I'm not a big fan of their stuff after 1991 at all. I like Murmur and Green a lot, not much else for me outside of those.

The first REM song I heard and I still like it. From my favourite REM album too.

I have to admit I never pegged them as a "Southern" band. Might have to reinvestigate.

They are culturally very southern. A very specific sort of weird arty southern eccentric that is all too familiar to me.

Would you say that was consistent throughout their career? My rough sense is that success led them to leave behind their regional impulses. Or maybe it just became more subtle than an outsider could pick up on?

Oh. Yeah. I should clarify I forget REM existed after about 1993. Yeah. I’m specifically talking about the IRS years.

No, later REM doesn’t feel nearly as southern.
