Coronavirus Thread of Doom

Post by WestwayKid »

I just listened to some of my co-workers go on for about 30 minutes about how they're cancelling vacations, hoarding hand sanitizer, and stocking up on supplies like water and toilet paper.

I'm sure I'm going to jinx myself by saying this, but I'm not afraid of the coronavirus. I'm not going to alter my life out of fear.

We're going to New Orleans in April and the thought of cancelling that trip hasn't even crossed my mind.

Am I being naive? Time will tell.

We've stocked up on food items a bit more than usual. I've always carried hand-wipes around, mostly to wipe tables off when I go into places like Starbucks or Panera -- because those people don't know how. I'm not worried, but I'm still taking extra precautions. I'm getting older. Right now, my stomach is a wreck for some reason, so I'm sure my immune system isn't 100%. I'm self-isolating a bit more than usual. I quit my job at the library a month ago, and right now, I'm not regretting that decision. Libraries are petri dishes for germs. What a gawdawful place. Eh. Do what you gotta do. You can't live in fear all the time.

I'm not keen on the toddler getting a nasty virus. Or having to take care of a toddler while I have a nasty virus, that's no fun. Sure, it is highly unlikely that it would kill us, but I do have grandparents (though I hope the one far along with dementia would catch it and go).
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

If you're not going to hot spots you should be fine. Wash your hands regularly, dont eat off bathroom floors only pick your nose with clean hands and dont eat the boogers because they may have germs trapped in them.

This is my biggest worry. My kids are 8 & 10, so they're not "little" little, but I worry more about them getting it than me. That said, the CDC says that there is no indication that kids get it worse than adults.

I'm not doing anything different, really. Wash my hands, etc. like normal. My immune system isn't compromised, so I'm not worried if I do catch it. Some Harvard specialist said 40-70% of the world will be exposed by the end of the year. Not a lot we can do to avoid it unless you hide out in a cabin in Idaho.

I use a shitload of hand sanitizer anyway, cuz i work in a doctor's office and I touch my face a lot, so nothing's changed for me.

Seattle is basically in a state of emergency at the moment. My office is still open, but they've offered work from home options for the foreseeable future. Pretty much all the big tech companies have closed their offices as employees test positive. Comicon vendors are pulling out, which means the reasons for going are lower, and my upcoming concerts may be canceled.

The real question I've been struggling with is, do I have a moral imperative to slow the spread of the virus by abstaining from these things I want to do if they DON'T get canceled. I really want to see Dead Can Dance next month, but is public health more important than my enjoyment of a legendary show? If, as Doc says, the majority of the world is going to be exposed anyway, does it make a difference?

I'm already pretty OCD about hand-washing so I'm good until I get it. There's a rumor at work that they're looking at options for closing the campus & maybe doing e-learning classes next quarter w/ support staff working from home; the college's Hong Kong (physical) campus has been closed since January.
