RIP Peter Bonetti
RIP Peter Bonetti
Hello,
RIP Peter Bonetti - goalkeeping great and fantastic person. This is very sad as Peter was a lively guy. We had so many good stories about out times at soccer camps here in the US. During a crossing session at Rice University camp I was directing, Peter and I were chatting about positioning. I told him I would tell the gk's to use a 3/4 stance when anticipating a cross - kind of open to the field to see oncoming attackers as well as the ball. Peter said, "I don't do that. I face the ball - I don't care what's behind me." The conversation was a bit more in depth that but you get the gist. It was a great conversation. I said, "Hey Peter, let's have that discussion in front of the kids." He agreed and we brought the gk's in and each of us spoke about positioning and their rationale. We ended by saying do what works best for you. It was such a good discussion/disagreement. He was so great about presenting his thoughts yet respecting and understanding mine. That affected me so much. We had a few conversations about 10 years ago as I was writing something about competition but that afternoon at Rice has affected my teaching and philosophy deeply. There's many more stories - all funny and warm. RIP, Peter.

Re: RIP Peter Bonetti
Indeed.
He was one my fathers three Chelsea heroes along with Peter Osgood and Ron Harris. When we used to play in our small yard he would always pretend to be one of those three. Only Ron is still alive.

My brother had a picture of the 1966 World Cup squad and I am sure he was one of the reserve goalkeepers.

I could have named the starting eleven in the final, plus Jimmy Greaves, but I didn't know the rest of the squad;101Walterton wrote: ↑12 Apr 2020, 5:15pmMy brother had a picture of the 1966 World Cup squad and I am sure he was one of the reserve goalkeepers.

Be interesting to know how many players they actually used in the tournament. Did they have 1 sub on the bench back then or none?laxman wrote: ↑12 Apr 2020, 6:27pmI could have named the starting eleven in the final, plus Jimmy Greaves, but I didn't know the rest of the squad;101Walterton wrote: ↑12 Apr 2020, 5:15pmMy brother had a picture of the 1966 World Cup squad and I am sure he was one of the reserve goalkeepers.

15 players used in the tournament.
8 players played every minute of the tournament - 6 games plus ET in final v Germany.
That is impressive.

Re: RIP Peter Bonetti
Looking at the full squad can't see many that are still alive now and sadly both Greaves and Hunter currently in hospital as well. Hunter with COVID-19.101Walterton wrote: ↑12 Apr 2020, 6:32pmBe interesting to know how many players they actually used in the tournament. RIP the Cat.
Sadly he'll mostly be remembered for the 1970 World Cup QF but I've seen footage of him and he was a great keeper.

8:44 How the fuck is that not a penalty? There was a blatant one before that when Franny Lee was taken out but this is just beyond a joke!101Walterton wrote: ↑13 Apr 2020, 7:28pmTalk about a low defensive line how much space on the Pitch especially England’s second goal!!

VAR? You'd have to be fucking blind to miss that! Maybe it was part of a bigger conspiracy to stop England winning, a few dodgy things happened over in old Mexico.101Walterton wrote: ↑13 Apr 2020, 8:05pmwhere was VARHeston wrote: ↑13 Apr 2020, 7:56pm8:44 How the fuck is that not a penalty?
