1976 Show - October 27th at Barbarella's Birmingham

Post by matedog »

This show is already on youtube, but not with Marky's tasty remix:

Setlist:
0:09 - White Riot
3:04 - London's Burning (Birmingham's Burning)
5:55 - I'm So Bored With the USA (You)
8:04 - How Can I Understand the Flies
10:00 - Protex Blue
12:00 - Deadly Serious
13:41 - Deny
17:05 - Career Opportunities
19:29 - 48 Hours
21:50 - What's My Name
23:36 - Janie Jones
26:02 - 1977
28:16 - 1-2 Crush On You

As noted in the youtube write up, this is a transitional show. Levene is long gone, but some of the first wave originals persist. White Riot and Career Ops are very new (not first time per setlist.fm, but Career Ops had its debut the day before) and the band is really starting to build up some of its live fire.

There were a few other shows considered, but this one has better sound, particularly with the remix, and is a more exciting listen than the September shows, in my opinion.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Are we doing a listening party on these or just posting observations?

I was thinking on holding off on listening party until EET Week since it's a bit challenging to coordinate, but I'm open to suggestions.

Surely that photo is wrong—didn't Joe only use that guitar for one show?

Thanks, Marky and Matey. Listening now.

A few initial observations:
- Though not quite 77 fury on tracks like "White Riot", this is really close to the speed and Joe-mania of that year. I remember the 76 shows being more subdued.
- I'm So Bored is introduced as "...with the USA" and Joe sings that for the first chorus, but then reverts to "I'm so bored with you" for some reason.
- Flies and Deadly Serious aren't bad, but about as good as the lesser S/T songs. Still pretty forgettable even in their most developed form here.
- I'm kinda fond of Joe singing 1-2 here. He also sounds completely insane in this performance.

Gave this a listen today...

Much improved quality--nice job. Is this the entire set? Does anyone know when Police and Thieves was introduced into the rotation?

FWIW-- I kind of like Deadly Serious.

Police and Thieves was a late addition to the album, wasn't it? Did they play it before release?

This is a surprisingly solid set, it's no wonder they shot to the top of the heap, just by being competent musicians. I have to admit I'm not as familiar with the bootlegs as some here. A couple thoughts:

— Protex Blue is a stormer live, it's too bad the lyrics aren't better.
— Do we have any kind of compilation of the best quality versions of the four or five early songs (Flies, Serious, I can't remember what the others are called..."I don't know what to do about you" or whatever)
—Deny is better here than on the album, damn
—Actually, all the UK-only tracks are better than on the album, bit of a shame
—I think I have to collect all the bootlegs now

Yeah I think so - borrowed (from Johnny Thunders/Heartbreakers?) for the opening night at The Roxy, Jan 1st 1977.

Doesn't look like it was played. There were only three gigs in 77 before the album was released. Two of them on Jan 1st. It was played on the French leg of the White Riot tour in late April

The former site of Barbarellas is minute away from the office I work in, turns out. Walked past it more than once. That's fun.

Not too many great live pics from that era that i haven't already used. Remember this is the second time I remastered this. At only a couple of months difference it will have to do. Plus it's a great pic. Should add that Joe used the white gretsch falcon more than once. Well twice but two shows same day at the Roxy.
