But Heston doesn't know what metal is, so they might find common ground.

Rush, Van Halen, Kiss, long hair and screechy lyrics, it's all metal to me. Did it look out of place on a sleeveless denim jacket in 1980? That's all you need to ask.

Did those bands think themselves metal? Did fans think it was metal? Was it promoted as metal? As I've said before, sure, anyone can come up with their own working definition and apply it to their heart's content, but if they're looking to persuade, taking into account how others view it is kind of important.

The Jam were my favorite metal band. The Who come in second just ahead of the Beatles.

I still think there's a schism between the US and UK on metal. Rush were definitely lumped in with Maiden, Priest etc in the early 80s over here. My mates were happy to wear the patches of all of those bands. It's down to whether you interpret it as heavy rock or heavy metal. To me, if they were in the Kerrang they were metal. That will be why I ended up going to see April Wine.

Im not a big Metallica fan but...RevTom.

Im not clicking in a Sum 41 link through.
You might like it but surely you don't agree that it's the best ever metal song.
That'll be one of these...

Crazy Train
Touch Too Much
Living After Midnight
Spirit of Radio
Run To the Hills
Lady of the Lake
Paranoid
Ain't Talking 'Bout Love
Ace of Spades
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Anyway, no one is arguing with this list. That's because it's the Daddy of metal lists. Put those ten songs on in a row motherfuckers. I will see you all in hell.

So Marillion were like super metal then right? They were always in Kerrang.

KISS were definitely considered metal in many circles, but for some reason Heston is good at ignoring that.

(It’s after midnight over there. I’m definitely trying to get some PRIZE IDOOT posting started...

Well that was a bit later, I'm talking 80/81. We invented metal so I'm pretty sure we can define it how we see fit.
