I’m sure the term was never around in DD days. I would put DD more in the same bracket as the Osmonds or Jackson 5 than Westlife and all those bands.
Have read that Take That was considered the first although whilst probably true it is harsh on Gary Barlow.

I agree with you re DD they were just a band like any other (Spandau Ballet being an obvious comparison) they just happened to be a band of pretty boys who dressed with the fashion and makeup of the time.Heston wrote: ↑29 Jun 2020, 4:34pmYeah, good point. That's why I can't put Duran Duran in the boy band bracket, they were all huge music fans. The premise for their band at the start was the Sex Pistols meets Chic. They didn't quite succeed with that but songs like Planet Earth and Girls On Film are fantastic pop records.

The Sex Pistols thing was not so far off as both John and Andy Taylor played with Steve Jones in the Neurotic Outsiders. They would play Silly Thing and Planet Earth.Heston wrote: ↑29 Jun 2020, 4:34pmYeah, good point. Do you think Mumford and Sons regret forming a band with a banjo player?
He is a great banjo player and he drives those first couple of albums but the more they try snd experiment with new direction the more they are stuck with a banjo.

Ive never listened to them much. My daughter was into them for a minute back in high school. I think she's moved on.101Walterton wrote: ↑02 Jul 2020, 7:48pmDo you think Mumford and Sons regret forming a band with a banjo player?

That’s what they tried to do but a banjo is pretty significant to the sound.revbob wrote: ↑02 Jul 2020, 7:53pmIve never listened to them much. Weird that I love the sound of a banjo, but most banjo music does nothing for me.

Duelling Banjos is great, otherwise it's about as welcome as bagpipes.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Flatt & Scruggs lately and I can confidently say the banjo is good, damn it.
