The Ultimate Women's Album - Side 1 Track 3 Vote - Round 1b

Post by Dr. Medulla »

You know the deal by now. Two votes per person in this round, top two (plus ties) move on unless one gets over 50%. Nominees this time were selected in alternating fashion based on nomination order.

Went with Epoxies and Against Me! Two bands I'd never heard of before yesterday.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

This part of the bracket is tough as hell. Can't decide.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

I like Patti Smith but I have never liked Because The Night. I don’t like the song and it just didn’t seem to fit Patti Smith. My wife likes it snd it is on her one and only Spotify playlist so I hear it a lot!!!
Just did some reading and discovered it was co-written by Springsteen which may also explain why my wife likes it snd I don’t!!

I prefer his version, I think his voice suits the song better.

I like both, don't love both. There are lyrical differences between both versions with Bruce being eye rollingly Brucey -
"I work all day out in the hot sun
Stay with me now till the morning comes"
and Patti's being eye rollingly Patti -
"Desire is hunger is the fire I breathe
Love is a banquet on which we feed"

At least Bruce's version had lots of guitar solos. Anyway, Hoy factoid - I first heard this song from 10,000 Maniacs Unplugged album, so I thought it was their song for a bit.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I just think that the understated, conspiratorial style of Bruce's version is more suited to the overall mood and lyrics.

Edit: the 10,000 Maniacs version is actually now my favourite of them all. the closest to committing to the steel eyed country song it wants to be.

God damn it, even when I'm trying not to, I convert people AWAY from Springsteen.

Going with my own pick (Against Me!) and the utterly sublime Rocksteady by Aretha. When I gave these times a spin again, that cut hit my pleasure centers like no other.
