I've known a couple. No comparison. ;)

Pretty popular name here in the late 60s apparently, no idea why.

I suspect I’m a Jonathan because of Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

Facebook is exactly what you make it. If your friends are assholes you get an asshole experience. A great way to keep in touch with friends and family you may otherwise never see.

Well there's a lot of people who use it as their source for news and information and there's the releasing of privacy and data.

The concept of using it as a communications platform is fine.

I thought Ratty put it well, once upon a time, in his opposition to what he called the Facebook tax. That is, when people post pictures or announce pointless shit about their lives, there's an obligation to Like it or comment, otherwise someone's nose gets out of joint and there might be real world repercussions (e.g., Aunt Linda gets pissed off that you didn't give a thumbs up to cousin Sandy getting her braces off, and complains to your mother, who is annoyed at you for creating this situation). We all know the stories about unfriending over dumb stuff like that. Like Ratty, I see that as a price greater than what Facebook offers, so I've gladly stayed away. Knowing that much about my family means being expected to be more invested in their lives than I want.

Luckily for me I spent decades cultivating my image as an unreliable and distant person so no one in my friend or family circle expects me to do anything on there.

Hello,

As was said above, it is what you make of it. I joined as former players post pictures of their kids - t's a nice way to keep in touch and see what's going on. I don't post much at all so if I don't like something, no one really notices. Coaches I've worked with in courses want friend me, so I do - and then never really do anything about it.

I wish it had a political meme removal device. There's an incredible amount of people who post anything that supports their political likes regardless of factual support. The political arguing that goes on lends tremendous support for DEVO.

My advice would be go ahead and join, skip that stupid posts, and use it to get updates from distant friends and acquaintances. Don't get too involved - post something only if necessary.
