I would guess that Joe heard the term "Gutter Poet" when reading about "Charles Bukowski".
Who knows. I'm sure if he'd come across the historical Claude Le Petit, the guy would have appealed to him:

This was roughly cobbled together but I wish they'd done it with this arrangement rather than the plodding electronic reggae...

"This is so obviously an amateur job by an anonymous hack, you can tell because the tempo doesn't line up. Not worth listening to." ;)

Ha! Good job mate. I might have a play around with it when I get more time to idle away in kangaroo court.
It was tough as I had to keep realigning the tracks every few seconds. It might be easier with computer software.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Yeah I expect there were many "dirty poets" I only chose Bukoswki because I know without doubt Joe would have read about him. It fits with the time line and narrative.

Might just be a case of changing the tempo on the slower less rock version. Will have a go at it.

"First Night Back in London" is underrated.
I've been screaming this for years. It's menacing and brooding, and then when the guitar finally comes in it's like you're walking down a dark alley and you suddenly feel a hand grab your shoulder roughly. I might hypothesize that big dub fans may be a bit more predisposed to liking this track.

Yep musically it's very inventive. Deserves a better lyric.

Yeah not great. But it does tell a true story and maybe the driver was a black guy. Could've said the cab was black. ;)

It's usually an auto-skip for me, but non-superfan friends have highlighted FNBiL as evidence of how creative and cool The Clash could be, so what do I know, I guess.

I think it was a direction that was very interesting but probably not what the band were as such. I really like it musically but could never see the band playing it live. I think it could only work as a B-side or album track. It's another track that kinda paves the way for B.A.D.

For me it's one of the better examples of what the band could have become with this "narco-funk" thing they were doing, along with Sean Flynn, Straight to Hell, and Ghetto Defendent. It's not the strongest song on RP, but stylistically, it's intriguing and makes me very curious for what could have been next if they continued with fusion.

Would've been interesting for sure. Kind of a modern rock dub.

Here's a question about those loopy CR b-sides — how would you describe Cool Confusion to someone?

"semi-electro dub-funk" apparently.
