That’s usually the reason I do things, but I feel like this is a bit different.

Those words are the Clash-specific version of my belief that "Rectum? Damned near killed him!" works with any cartoon. *Any* Clash question can (and should) be answered with Bernie's manifesto, and everyone here should nod solemnly.

Found this a good read. I'm British and I can relate to a lot of what he says.

Funny that Kabaservice is (was?) a Republican, albeit of the moderate stripe.

There is a lot of suspicion about this article on FB. A few people have done a bit research on this fella.

I've never looked into the bloke myself but there seems to be a gripe about attempted right-wing co-optation of the Clash.

Ah. Kabaservice isn't part of the lunatic side of the right; his book is about the endless purge by the nuts to kick out anyone with any sense of duty or humanity.

But the Clash's use of rhetoric makes them a good target for anyone who sees themselves as rebels against power. They were squishy liberals with a sense of decency who played at being revolutionaries. Something like "Guns of Brixton" plays well to those who genuinely have to fear the police or people like Mensa Steve who just imagined he did. So even if the band would be appalled by right-wing nuts inspired by their music, the music itself is open enough for that kind of application. Which is a big reason why they've had wide and long-lasting appeal. Bands whose focus is clear tend not to expand their fanbase.

Fair points. Like I say, I didn't look too far into it myself.

100% concur. I know people whose politics can only really be described as far right ( Although I'm sure they would deny it themselves) who are life long Clash fans.
I was told by someone who interviewed her that Tessa Pollitt of the Slits thinks that Joe intentionally wrote White Riot to appeal to both left and right. Although this isn't something I personally believe to be the case myself.

In my experience rightly or wrongly Clash fans encompass a broad church politically.

What sort of things lead you to describe them this way? Is it from interviews or actions?

They talked the game of the radical, but they were more ambitious to sell lots of records, lots of tickets, enjoy the comforts of rock stardom when offered. The art remains inspirational, but the band themselves … less so.

So you find Joe's self-categorization as a socialist to be off-base? I don't really know if he did any practical work on that score.
