Pepper - Side A - Round 2
6 songs remain. Probably Fixing a Hole or Kite for me this time around.

Radical position: I'm voting against the title track because I don't feel strongly against any of the remaining options, but the half-assed concept conceit deserves to be singled out. So, despite being a cool tune and all, that's where I'm planting my flag.

Sticking with Kite. I find the main melody boring and the circus calliope bits irritating.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Fixing a Hole is underrated. Ringo's drumming alone is pretty spectacular. I also love the heavy treble on the guitar solo (I think played by Paul or at least doubletracked with George).

IDK, I kind of like the quietly menacing quality of this song. It's creepy.

Thematically, it's of a piece with SFF. Where Paul is nostalgic for childhood, John saw anxiety lurking. So he turns something wondrous like the circus coming to town into a child's bad trip. It's arguably more psychedelic than LSD.WestwayKid wrote: ↑23 Dec 2020, 12:35pmIDK, I kind of like the quietly menacing quality of this song. It's creepy.

I agree with this. It's a fun track, but not better than what is left...so the goofy concept theme then becomes enough to earn my vote.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Dec 2020, 11:58amRadical position: I'm voting against the title track because I don't feel strongly against any of the remaining options, but the half-assed concept conceit deserves to be singled out. I bloody Kite. In Liverpool, I saw a repro of the original Victorian circus poster that Lennon got the lyrics off and if it had been under a tenner I would have got the only Fab merch that I ever would have. The mood, sound, melody, and story of the song are one of the best things on Sgt Pepper.

Just looking at the last round, wasn't Kite also voted off?

WWK let it stand because Tom said he accidentally voted for it.

Well said. The melody itself is fascinating, winding in and out like a serpent. George Martin's production work is some of his best ever, translating Lennon's wishes (it's been said that while Paul would be very precise about what he wanted, John was often far more vague) into something both whimsical and creepy.Silent Majority wrote: ↑23 Dec 2020, 1:16pmI bloody Kite. Hard not to see that Lennon was a proponent of happy accidents.WestwayKid wrote: ↑23 Dec 2020, 1:36pmWell said. The melody itself is fascinating, winding in and out like a serpent.
