Re: Beaner's and Rattie's Weather Porn Thread
We have a probably 100 foot driveway (our garage is on the back of the lot) and I absolutely need a plow service. If I tried to shovel, it would take me hours and I would either have a heart attack or throw my back out for a week

I haven't shoveled a driveway since I left Virginia, but it seems great. Clear your driveway and do your workout for the day.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

It sounds great in the abstract, but shovelling doesn't generate the endorphin buzz like a workout. It's just grinding, mentally hard. It's defeat sweat. Maybe it's my age, but it's just nasty.

My instinct, when I see long driveways, is to wince at the thought of dealing with it in winter. It's more curse than blessing.

I wish that the people who settled your lots' cities had checked out the winters of the places you's live in before settling.

Yeah. It makes me bone tired and sore in a way that no workout ever does. And not the sore of “I accomplished something.” The sore of “I have been bested by nature.” Especially if it’s wet snow.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑17 Feb 2021, 11:20amIt sounds great in the abstract, but shovelling doesn't generate the endorphin buzz like a workout. Scandis have a perverse pleasure in engaging winter in manly combat. Indoors, they're morose and expecting the worst, but outside somehow the threat of hypothermia fills them with a zest for life. Lunatics.

One of the best purchases I ever made, a few years ago, was a Carhartt Arctic Extreme insulated coverall, rated to minus 35F. Feels like I’m snug in a warm bed no matter how cold the weather. It made the snow clearing experience much more pleasant. It’s kinda heavy, so not great if I’m shoveling, but with a snowblower I don’t notice the excess weight. I typically wear long underwear, jeans, and a sweatshirt underneath it, but yesterday when I got inside after around 2 hours of snowblowing I realized I had forgotten to put the jeans on. I was perfectly warm without them so from now on I'll do without the excess weight.
We average around 95 inches a year here, but I’m guessing we’ve had about 20-30 inches tops so far. I’m wondering when the rest of it is going to show up.

Well, maybe a little less if we get any unseasonably warm showers.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑17 Feb 2021, 1:27pm… ladies.Kimmelweck wrote: ↑17 Feb 2021, 1:21pmWe average around 95 inches a year here, but I’m guessing we’ve had about 20-30 inches tops so far.

Im usually good with regular clothes a hoody, hat and gloves, sunglasses are good too when the wind is blowing. My only problem ever is my hands. If Im shovelling fine but snow blowing my hands will get cold.Kimmelweck wrote: ↑17 Feb 2021, 1:21pmOne of the best purchases I ever made, a few years ago, was a Carhartt Arctic Extreme insulated coverall, rated to minus 35F. You could try layering—some thin gloves meant for brisk days underneath some proper insulated gloves.revbob wrote: ↑17 Feb 2021, 2:18pmIm usually good with regular clothes a hoody, hat and gloves, sunglasses are good too when the wind is blowing. Re: Beaner's and Rattie's Weather Porn Thread
I was usually fine with regular clothes too, at least to start, but then with a bit of sweat the cold would start seeping in under my coat or through wet jeans. I feel impervious to the cold with the Carhartt, even with a bit of sweat, and could probably spend the night in a snowdrift with it. Hands and head never get cold any more either as the suit traps so much excess heat I don’t miss it when it’s lost through those areas. I agree sunglasses are a must though, for wind or just glare off the snow on a sunny day.revbob wrote: ↑17 Feb 2021, 2:18pmIm usually good with regular clothes a hoody, hat and gloves, sunglasses are good too when the wind is blowing.
