Hey Jude is the bigger shock for me. Their biggest selling single, and surely it can only be fatigue that is making people vote it off first. A religious experience without needing religion.ArmagideonTim wrote: ↑23 Feb 2021, 8:26pmI've not commented much but thank you WWK, this has been a highlight of lockdown II for me.WestwayKid wrote: ↑23 Feb 2021, 3:59pmI should have done the math before I proposed it...
...but seriously it has been a great time.
That said, can't believe people are voting for Rain already.

I think the beef is that 90% of its lyrics are "na." Also it's pretty boring even without that.Heston wrote: ↑23 Feb 2021, 8:34pmHey Jude is the bigger shock for me. That communal thing was new then, I enjoy the long fade with Macca going crazy. The main body of the song is superb.Kory wrote: ↑23 Feb 2021, 8:45pmI think the beef is that 90% of its lyrics are "na." Historical context helps the song a bit (and I don't mean the Julian Lennon part). Think about Western nations in 1968, especially the US. Shit was polarized, open violence, wholly contrary to the Beatles' worldview. They respond with what amounts to a campfire sing-a-long urging friendship and hope. It's pure Beatles, emphasizing commonality and love. And it was rejected in that context because the serious kids didn't want to hear any of that (for the same reason, the committed kids hated the b-side, "Revolution," with its rejection of violence and ideology). It's radical pacifism at a time when everyone else wanted to rip the other's throat out. I can't help but respect their commitment to another way, however naive and hopeless.Kory wrote: ↑23 Feb 2021, 8:45pmI think the beef is that 90% of its lyrics are "na." As it's on its way out, I will casually mention that I got to hit a few notes on the Lady Madonna piano when I went to visit a friend who works at Abbey Road.

Heston, I’m on year 35 of hating Hey Jude. It fucking sucks.

For the record I like Lady Madonna a lot. Unlike Hey Jude it’s not a boring wank that people put on a pedestal.
