(That's a bit inside baseball. Ladino is kind of the Sephardic equivalent of Yiddish. A combo of Spanish and Hebrew, basically).
Ha! My friend, who I've been talking with about this, is an Argentinian Jew.

But he may not be Sephardic! Most of the South American Jews I know are Ashkenazi. My best friend in STL is from Uruguay, but her grandparents immigrated there from Germany.

Ah, right. I don't know his family's Old World roots.

Bottom line is I have major Sephardic envy. I used to think I had to have some Sephardic ancestry because my great grandfather on my dad's side was very swarthy (he lived well into his 90s and didn't die until I was a teenager, so I actually knew him pretty well). I used to think he had to be Syrian or Yemini or something. Nope, did the DNA test and I am 99% boring ass Ashkenazi.

Don't worry, to some populations you'll always be terrifyingly exotic.

i didn't know you moved there for him. That makes the relationship even more tragic. Now what the hell was he doing out there?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
