Last week of Feb is usually around when I start Ken Burns' Baseball. Maybe this'll be the year I finally finish the whole thing.
I'll bet I've watched it all at least ten times. I love it for the grand narrative sweep, tho I don't agree with Burns' framing that places Jackie Robinson and the colour line as the key dividing line. I lean towards the role of Curt Flood, Andy Messersmith, and Dave McNally as more significant. Robinson was the symbol of integrating baseball racially, but Flood, Messersmith, and McNally symbolized the importance of all ballplayers to better control their own labour. That's not to diminish Robinson, only to suggest that the end of the reserve clause affected more ballplayers positively. Owners are still seeking to roll back the power of baseball's labour rather than re-segregate. They know what's more significant. But Ken Burns is a liberal, not a socialist, so I get why he emphasizes race over labour.
Is this why Bernie tends to do so poorly on issues of race?

Probably, yeah. I'm not suggesting the injustices and marginalizations aren't intertwined—clearly they inform and reinforce each other—but it's telling that amongst liberals racial and sexual tolerance and integration is much more palatable and easier to conceptualize ideologically than labour rights.

I stand corrected. He's in Sarasota now. He's been trolling me with tropical pics. He was in Vieques last week. He's retired teacher enjoying the Vermont winter not in Vermont.

Ahh, that make sense. When I was in Vieques they didn't have much infrastructure.

Saw a weird factoid today: When Tony LaRussa first started managing the White Sox in 1979, not a single current major leaguer was alive. I looked and, yeah, last year Adam Wainwright, 38, was the oldest player on a big league roster.

if the Angels count as a "big league roster" is debatable, but Albert Pujols.

Weird. Did he opt not to play last season?
