I’m baffled by anyone picking a track made after 1979 on this set because the riches are embarrassing before then.
It's true but then Radio Clash is also great.

And let's not forget about First Night Back in London!

It is, but I don’t personally think it’s as great. But yeah, id think of that as a sensible choice long before a single Combat Rock b side entered the picture.

A thought: If CTC didn't exist, we'd spend an inordinate amount of time justifying those CR b-sides. In other words, thank Christ for CTC.

Thing is I don't dislike any of them. Sure I might like them the least. But at least they are covering new territory. First Night Back in London is very interesting musically. Lyrically much less so.

If I can offer praise for being adventurous, it's still a failed experiment.

I think Radio Clash is amazing, a tour de force from Joe. The flip side is lame in comparison.

I can honestly say they’re not as unlistenable to me as some say they are. But they aren’t good, or even acceptable, when you lay them against the quality of the previous ones.

Yeah, that one is perfectly defensible as a top five, dependent on taste.

It is partly a relative measure—expecting more from that band even on b-sides—but nothing about those CR b's makes you wish for more of the same (unless you're, like, Kory, and that's maybe the least of his fetishes).

Some of the musical ideas are interesting and executed in different songs would work well. But I agree with your overall assessment.

2. Gates of the West
3. Justice Tonight/Kick it Over
4. Stop the World
5. First Night Back in London

This was hard, I really wanted to include City of the Dead, Pressure Drop, The Prisoner, and Groovy Times.
Wow "Stop the World" before all those other great tracks. I like StW but those other tracks are way too strong not to beat the experimental nature of that song. But I appreciate the individual and personal preference so good on you Kory.
As a big trip hop/downtempo fan, its tone and mood really appeal to me. I think it fits in well with whatever genre-less thing Rat Patrol was trying to be.
