Re: Don's book
I never read his previous book but it wasn't like a real autobiography as far as I can gather. I'm a few chapters in to the new one and it just reads as a straight up autobiography. Great so far reading about him growing up in the late 60s/70s and all the associated music and youth culture.

Consider it the rather dodgy support act to Don's main event.Marky Dread wrote: ↑11 Mar 2021, 9:03amMy book has arrived!!!!

Re: Don's book
Finished the book today, interesting that Don is editing a revised version of Westway To the World for release in 2021 with new footage.

All this appropriation is all nonsensical to me as long as you are celebrating that music in a positive way. Fuck how many different styles does a BAD track like "The Battle of All Saints Road" appropriate? Surely if you take the sound of another's culture then you do so because you are acknowledging it's quality and greatness.
Music is universal it's there for all to enjoy. Who invented music anyway? Isn't all music appropriated by each and every culture.

Re: Don's book
Inder discussed it well here awhile back, but it developed my take on it. Basically "cultural appropriation" discussions take very real issues - racism, exploitation, capitalism, etc. and add a gatekeeping, obfuscating layer that muddies, detracts, and degrades attacks on these very real issues.Marky Dread wrote: ↑16 Mar 2021, 6:54pmIf you've got something to say then just bloody say it. Why are we arguing about who is allowed to do what type of music? What makes someone qualified to do it? What makes someone qualified to determine if someone is qualified to do it? None of this matters to the real heart of the issue which will never be addressed if we focus on ambiguous frivolities.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.
