He lived in Medfield, a very quaint suburb. The road from there to the ballpark goes right through the town I grew up in. The entire time he was with the Sox, on nights he pitched, there were signs of support and encouragement up in peoples from yards on that road to Fenway. He was beloved and lionized for a solid decade, and then... First there was the ham handed videogame company boondoggle and it went straight downhill from there.

Yeah, it can't really be overstated how much good will he burned up to make it intolerable for him to live in fucking Medfield. He could have been a king for life in the area, but he pissed everything away. Just staggering hubris and racism.
