Really? Wasn't a hit in the US then? Over here it was pretty impossible to avoid.

I make an effort to avoid radio stations, situations (and to a lesser extent people) who are likely to listen to top 40 type music.

I'm flattered I'm one of the "lesser extents."

Oh yeah while the top 40 isn't really my kinda place these days. I would never close my ears to it.

I bet Rev would have liked a lot of the UK top 40 between 1978 and 1982.Marky Dread wrote: ↑21 Mar 2021, 3:49pmOh yeah while the top 40 isn't really my kinda place these days. I would never close my ears to it.

Well when you consider it contained bands like The Specials, The Clash, The Jam, The Ruts and The Redskins all making the top 40 he would've been hard pushed to ignore it.Heston wrote: ↑21 Mar 2021, 3:54pmI bet Rev would have liked a lot of the UK top 40 between 1978 and 1982.Marky Dread wrote: ↑21 Mar 2021, 3:49pmOh yeah while the top 40 isn't really my kinda place these days. People will often refer to a song that was popular in 19xx or 20xx and say you must have heard it, it was all over the radio. Upon reviewing these songs Ive never felt as if I cheated myself out of something. I just never saw the point in listening to that kind of radio over here Ive always lived in places with a strong (except those 6 months in Phoenix) alternative radio footprint where Ive discovered enormous amounts of music that I love. Again I liken top 40 radio here to McDonalds. Are there a few things on the McDonalds menu that dont turn my stomach yeah probably but Im confident Im not missing out on anything by not finding out.

Okee doke, revbob stepped up, so we'll get this moving again. Next Monday it's Tom again.
Cha Cha Cohen, “A=A”
The rhythm section from The Wedding Present with a singer who's the female version of Mark E. Smith. The album this is from, All Artists Are Criminals, is one of those "best albums you've never heard." The music is very cinematic, dark, compelling as hell.
Cinerama, “Dance Girl Dance”
Speaking of cinematic and the Wedding Present, here's something from David Gedge's next band after pausing TWP. It exudes 1960s smooth and groovy cinematic pop. Gedge sounds like he's wearing a slim Italian suit, slick-backed hair, French cigarette dangling from his fingers. It swings, baby.
Momus, “Ten Foot Hut”
From last year's Vivid, an album about life during the pandemic. I've found his work really inconsistent since the 1990s, but I like this song, typically dry and minimal, about hope for some kind of better normal.
Fritz, “Jan. 1”
Just discovered her a few weeks ago. She's an Australian teenager who writes angsty teenage songs. We've all been that age. I like this for punk pop music married to a dream pop distant and slow vocal.
Norman Westberg, “The Olive Rolls Away From the Tree”
Aaaand something to please very few people, I imagine. Westberg is best known as a near-constant member of Swans, but for the last decade or so he's pursued solo work as an abstract ambient artist more in the Eno vein. So that might kill it for some right there. But this sounds like hope to me, of sun parting dark clouds and spring succeeding a mean winter. It's the sound of reassurance that it'll be okay. Just sit back and let it wash over you.

Second time. Predictions that I'd kill this the first time proved false, so I'm trying again.

Hello,
Cha Cha Cohen - great dark rhythm - 9/10
Cinerama - okay-ish mope rock but catchy; I think the singer is posing as mopey but he thinks he's arty - 7/10
Momus - novelty arty techno; okay stuff bordering on pretentious - 7.5/10
Fritz - too dreamy and sad (anger is an energy); mopey as well - 5/10
Norman Westerberg - I'm still waiting for this one to start; I'm not inclined to have something wash over me - I'm more of a quick shower person - 3/10
