Miss you, Wally.

Does anyone know if his daughter is going to be in the Olympics this summer?
I'm not sure they have named the squad yet, but fingers crossed. 101W originally thought these Olympics were a bit too early for her but obviously the postponement has changed that a bit.

It looks like she isn't competing in Japan now. Not sure if she didn't make the team/qualify or something else (injury?).

Regardless, I found another article about her and Wally from March: https://www.newsroom.co.nz/lockerroom/n ... r-late-dad
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Thanks for finding and sharing the article. It would be great to see her in Paris 2024... and Wally... what a truly great guy. I had no idea he had been a detective at Scotland Yard!

Thanks for posting that new article matedog. Fascinating, and heartbreaking.
I think we were so lucky to have Wally as part of the gang here. And I'm sure his daughter will continue to go from strength to strength,

It's amusing now to think of what he must have thought of us when we'd rant against cops.  Bugger kept those cards tight to his chest.

I think 101W told me that her target was originally the Commonwealth Games next year in Birmingham but then she had a really good season in which she made more progress than expected, and the Olympics became a possibility, in part due to the one year delay. As far as I can tell none of the NZ pole vaulters managed to meet the minimum pre tournament qualification requirement for the Olympics, in no small part due to the lack of tournaments available to achieve the qualification.

101W was planning on coming back to the UK for the Commonwealth Games. :(
