I knew it was a BAD idea to open this thread.
Who pfaffed the pfaff? Who got pfaffed tonight?
Re: Return of the Mighty Observations Thread
Just read an article saying Elvis Costello will no longer be performing "Oliver's Army" because of a "racist slur" in the lyrics.
Really a shame, great song, but I respect him for being sensitive enough to realize it could offend some people.
Maybe he can rewrite the offensive line to something less controversial, dunno, just a thought.

Re: Return of the Mighty Observations Thread
I read another story about that and he said he'd been using a new lyric, but decided that it was drawing attention to what had been changed—everyone in the crowd knows what should come and then it doesn't—so he decided to just stop it altogether. A rare instance of an artist appreciating changing social contexts and not vetoing it with "I'm an artist."Sparky wrote: ↑12 Jan 2022, 5:39pmJust read an article saying Elvis Costello will no longer be performing "Oliver's Army" because of a "racist slur" in the lyrics.

Such a great lyric, but he totally gets that it belongs in context, not in the forever jambalaya of drive time radio.Sparky wrote: ↑12 Jan 2022, 5:39pmJust read an article saying Elvis Costello will no longer be performing "Oliver's Army" because of a "racist slur" in the lyrics.

Re: Return of the Mighty Observations Thread
This bit gave me a wry smile.
“You know what. It [not playing it] would do me a favor,” he went on. “Because when I fall under a bus, they’ll play “She,” “Good Year For The Roses,” and “Oliver’s Army. I’ll die, and they will celebrate my death with two songs I didn’t write. What does that tell you?

Re: Return of the Mighty Observations Thread
I could have sworn we had a "Take This Job and Shove It" thread but I couldn't find it. Anyway, I found out very suddenly yesterday afternoon that I'm being transferred to another department after 7 years in my current one. On top of this, my manager is being demoted without warning down to my level, and the people that have decided all this haven't discussed any of the logistics about how it's going to actually work. They wanted to make the department reorganization ASAP and not worry about whether it's actually going to be efficient at all. I've gone from being a huge fish in a small pond to being by far the smallest fish in a slightly bigger pond, which is to say, pretty expendable once the next round of layoffs comes up.

Re: Return of the Mighty Observations Thread
Shit, that stinks. I suppose knowing what's going to come at some helps a bit with keeping your ear to the ground for a new job (jumping before you're pushed). Or maybe the reorg is a complete bust and they reverse course in a few months.Kory wrote: ↑14 Jan 2022, 5:52pmI could have sworn we had a "Take This Job and Shove It" thread but I couldn't find it.
