I haven't drunk the Ernest Becker Kool-Aid but I am a proponent of memento mori thinking. There's nothing inherently wrong with songs about death.

Not at all. If music has the capability to express, explain and explore who we are, then death should be as on the table for that medium as it is in art, film, and literature.
