This is the view out of my snow-clogged upstairs window. Can’t really make out individual snowflakes, just a swirl of white wind, like milk. In normal times, you’d see 5-6 of my neighbors’ houses in this pic, just beyond the trees and 200 feet away across the street, but not today. It’s about 15F right now, wind WSW at 25-35mph, gusting to 50mph. Snow should continue until about 10pm. I’m not even gonna bother clearing the driveway until tomorrow. Seriously hoping it's less than 2 feet of snow but I have no idea. All emergency services are down in my area, but still got power at least.
Yuck! I don't miss that at all. Glad you still have power.

Ugh. Feel for you, man. It's just deflating when you see that kind of white-out. We did another round of shovelling this morning, but it wasn't wet snow, so not too bad. Of course the snow's started up again with a pretty significant wind.

Snow and wind seem to have stopped for now. Here’s a view just outside my window at 9pm, looking up towards the gutter at snow hanging about 18 inches off the roof. For the first time in 50 years, I’m not at my parents’ house for Christmas Eve, which kinda blows, but whatever. Little bro tested positive for covid yesterday, and I ain’t driving in this shit, so we’ve postponed our family Christmas thing for a week or so. Gonna be spending probably 3 hours clearing snow tomorrow. Could be worse I guess. The Bills won today, so…that’ll do, Santa.

That snow hanging off the gutters looks pretty cool.

Sorry to hear about your brother catching COVID, hope it's mild and he's well soon.

Thanks Sparky. Hoping the same for your brother-in-law. Everybody in my immediate family is vaxxed and boosted, so yeah, hopefully it’s a mild case and doesn’t last long. My Mom had it a month ago and got through it in a few days with only mild symptoms.

Heading back out in the dark for another round of snow clearing. Ugh. My driveway is over 100 feet long, and the snow was drifted over 40 inches on like a third of it. Sucks when my snowblower is only 18 inches tall. Mostly just have the lower third to do yet, but the plow dumped 3 feet of frozen chunks at the end of my driveway, so that should be fun. I think I’m just gonna cut out a path for the mailman tonight, and worry about the rest tomorrow.

God but I hate that shit, especially because it seems like they dump more in front of our driveway than our neighbour. Yesterday when it happened I was looking out the window, and as three big snow boulders were left behind, I muttered, "Oh, you cunt." Had to use an ice axe to them before shoveling them aside.

Normally, I just keep my ice axe on the wall for intimidation/display purposes, but this time, yeah, she’s going into action.

Our old house was on a corner and the plow would come along and the first driveway it would hit after like 100 ft was ours and I would get a 4 ft high and deep wall of snow in my driveway on many occasions. I'd often get stuck in the driveway or come home and have to shovel that shit before I could get in the driveway. The one saving grace was I had a truck with 4WD and could often just push thru the smaller shit.

This was the first experience since swapping a Crosstrek for a Fiat. The little car is not good with any kind of snow challenge.

Just in (at 10pm) from the last of the major snow clearing. Might do a little cleanup tomorrow, but I can pull in and out of the driveway and the sidewalks are clear so I’m done for the night. Spent a good 4 hours wrestling with my snowblower today. I’d like to meet anyone who dreams of a white Christmas in a dark alley for 5 minutes. I prefer my Christmases a dull grey-green.

Spoke with my in-laws in Washington state, they had about 3 feet of snow on the ground around their place.

I hate to gloat, but it was in the low 70's here today.

It’s supposed to be mid-50s here on New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day. I’ll take it.

I’m just in at 9pm from a final 2 hours with the snowblower, but I’m finally fully dug out. I’ve spent 6 hours clearing snow in the last day and a half. My feet are aching. So far, the blizzard-related death toll in the Buffalo area from the Christmas Eve blizzard is up to at least 31 and counting. Mostly from exposure, lack of heat, lack of emergency services, and cardiac-related snow-shoveling events (I can identify with the last one, because I actually laid down in the driveway to rest in the middle of this last snow-clearing session). Buffalo is still digging itself out, so the death toll will undoubtedly rise as the streets are cleared. The National Guard is helping with rescue efforts and with snow clearing (though not with my driveway, unfortunately). My neighbor waved to me from his window an hour ago as I cleared the end of his driveway from the plow-dumped ice pile. :approve:

This was a historically bad storm – like, probably Buffalo’s worst storm on record. Missing out on family Christmas festivities is a minor inconvenience in comparison. I went to the grocery store today and the shelves were nearly empty with super long lines. I shop at Tops, different location but the same chain where the mass shooting took place in Buffalo earlier this year. Two other Tops locations nearby, which I’ve been to, were robbed/looted during the early stages of this storm, so they remain closed. Total shitshow here, but I’m super lucky my family is safe. Otherwise, we have gorgeous summers. Traffic is never a pain in the ass. We have lakes, rivers…best kept secret in the USA. But whatever you do, don’t move to Buffalo, because every 20 years or so, it kinda sucks a little. Go Bills!
