Surf's up!

Post by Dr. Medulla »

Hey, gremmies, which early 60s Beach Boys "surf"ing song is too much, daddy-o?

Hmmm, haven't cast a vote yet. Dwelling on it:

Surfin Safari - David Marks with his tasty punk garage licks and a driving, upbeat tune make this a solid early effort

Surfin USA - quintessential "let's list shit" beach boys with the obvious chuck berry rework. And, hey, if you're gonna steal, steal from Chuck, right?

Surfer Girl - this one is an early emerging indication of Brian (& co's) real talents. A little more musical heft and some gorgeous harmonizing make for one of the BB's first powerhouse slow numbers.

Surf City - no real opinion. It's fine.

Probably a battle between safari and girl in my head and heart.

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

Dick Dale - Surf Beat is the correct answer. Or any other DD song for that matter.

Hello,

I'm not much of a Beach Boys fan. These are my points of reference:

Surfin' Safari

Kill Surf City

I like Kill Surf City better - so should I vote for Surf City?

I'd take the Gears over the Beach Boys myself.

I went with surfin safari, just too fun.

the thing about the beach boys is that they were never a surf rock band.

They were proto-punk. :twitch:

I picked Safari as well. Something about that vocal melody where it rises and Mike's voice cracks on that line "I tell you surfing's mighty wild" has just stuck out to me since I was a kid. It sounds amazing. They raise the melody each verse and it sounds great each time, but that sorta voice crack last time around is extra special.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Surfer Girl is the winner here, but I'd have thought Surf's Up would have been one of the poll options ... ;)

Switched my vote from USA to Safari just on the basis of that wee solo on the latter.

Also, watching clips of them on tv shows in the early 60s, it's hilarious how Mike's premature balding makes him look like their uncle.
