So Butters is going through some things. Possible cystitis/uti. Took him to the vet (on Thursday) where they kept him all day and hooked him up with pain meds while they ran tests. It turned out that he had a severe reaction to the pain medication. He had all sorts of strange symptoms, mostly behavioral/neurological, that scared the hell out of me. I took him to an emergency vet after hours and the doc, when he found out what they gave him, told me that it was pain meds. Butters was more than a little spacey. He didn't blink. He didn't sleep, eat, drink, or was responsive to his environment for 48 hours, and he was paranoid as fuck. It took him three days to finally poop. The meds were only supposed to last for 24 hours, but... He still has a head jerking thing going on, but for the most part, my little Butterball is back. He finally started meowing this morning. The stuff is called Simbadol, for those who might be interested. I found some other cat owners online that had the exact same experience. That was reassuring, but yikes. Poor fella.
Yikes, that's alarming. Very glad he's recovered from the drug, and thanks for sharing the name in case it's suggested to us.
It's buprenorphine, which is an opiod. I'm going to see if I can make a note of it in his file to avoid this shit, might even contact the fda or the drug maker to encourage them to expand their warning label.

I can appreciate why you were so wigged out. Whenever our cats have been on pain meds, it's been the usual dopiness, drunken teetering. Alarming to me because I overreact, but expected.

Very scary indeed, I'm glad he's ok now, that for the heads up on the Simbadol. I'm going to check with my daughter, her cat was given something to keep him calm when they flew cross country to relocate, he had a similar reaction and had to go to an emergency vet.
Oh, wow. I'm really curious to know what they gave her cat.
She said she can't recall the name, it's been about 5 years, but she did say it was a dog sedative they used because her cat is so big (he's a Siberian).

I'd say the drug is officially out of his system. The head tremor/jerking thing is lessening so that's good. The uti thing? Not too sure. He's not running back and forth to the litter box as much so it seems he's improving. Thanks for asking.

Just to boost my post count, I want to mention that we are going to buy a sheep. Our friends live on a farm and they will have a small flock of sheep starting next summer. We will buy one as a present for our kids.

Next step is obviously getting a sheep dog. I am quite fond of border collies. And a Range Rover...

May I suggest you consider naming the sheep 101Walterton?

Huh, don't think I've read too many anti-pet columns before: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... wning-pets

Assumed this was some sort of PETA bit but, nope, this is a Verso Books-published socialist thought leader. Glad to see the intellectual leaders on the left are as tuned into convincing, popular messages as usual.
