I didn't think it'd work with your prompt, but surely Don't Look Back stands up as a major rock and roll documentary from a historical perspective. The tour where Dylan goes electric and faces hostile crowds, etc.
I could actually use that to talk about the relationship between artist and fans (it's a big theme of mine; one of my exam questions is always to ask whether the history of rock music is about artists making music or fans consuming music). My main lecture on the topic is the Beatles and fans, but when I originally conceived it I was going to do it using Dylan. But I decided I preferred talking about the Beatles.
This is why you need me to be a guest lecturer!

The moment you mention Dave or Wattie, I'm cutting your mike.

Mystery Train has a lot of rock n roll connotations and I think it stands up, especially the blu ray version.

GG Allin Hated, one of the roughest films you will see on any subject!

Heavy load is a great documentary about a punk band with learning disabilities, really good and very inspiring.

Performance is a wicked portrait of clash land (Ladbrokes grove) staring Mick Jagger no less

For comedy the finest and probably most accurate are the Comic strip presents Bad news parts 1 and 2.... hilarious but depressingly true...hahaha

Eat the Rich is another great Rock N Roll comedy staring Lemmy and lot of other recognisable faces

Another Lemmy Movie is called Down and out with the dolls about an all girl band, Lemmy lives in a small room in the band house and offer mystic wisdom!

I have 3 shelves full of Rock N Roll discs....but these have sprung to mind

I've got my KISS lecture coming up on Friday—I always dedicate it to you—and I do show an ad that ran for it.

This is Spinal Tap. Not sure you have any lessons about just how dumb rock and roll really is...
Oh god, I’d love to show that, but not sure what kind of history themes I could meaningfully draw from it.

If it helps where I’m thinking, 8 Mile, Almost Famous, and That Thing You Do are on my consideration list right now. For documentaries, I’m thinking along the lines of Salad Days, tho I’m teaching Kevin Mattson’s book in that class, so that’s a bit of overlap that I’d like to avoid.

I watched it again and, damn, now I'm wavering about maybe I should show it instead of the Stains. Covers so many themes from the course and is a bit of a corrective to the readings that inevitably highlight where punk ideals step on rakes in practice for one reason or another. Very torn.

I've always introduced it as being inspired by the insane ramblings over way too many years by my friend John (I've never used your last name) who really should know better. The line gets a laugh. (I also wear that horrible KISS Yankees shirt that revbob bought me to show that my friends despise me.)
