I know it nearly convinced an impressionable young Flex to make it his first Clash album, but that might not be a good argument in its favor.

I wouldn't fault anyone for that take. Just like a preference for any of the first three albums. London Calling itself, the photo is a little too blurry and the shadows are a little confusing. Minor complaints, but it's not a flawless cover.

Me too. I think the LC image is overrated. Take away the Elvis style font and it becomes very average. Plus a live shot for a studio album isn't so great.

I don't think I had heard that before. It doesn't seem dramatically different from LC (perhaps also a cost savings move) - black and white photo with limited color lettering. I believe that, just hadn't heard that before. Regardless, they probably could have done better with less for S!

I think they did try with the packaging by including the Steve Bell cartoons and the fold out lyric sheet. It was a bit of a rush job for the actual sleeve picture. I like it but agree it could be better.

Agree regards the CR sleeve. Penny Smith took many better looking shots at that session which could've improved the sleeve.
